you saw them? Were they plastic over pads, or just th UE pads?

Plastic over pads.  Actually reminded me a lot of the diamond featherweights.

Wait a minute .........  just hang on one second here ...........

You mean to tell me that the SOFT SHELL CHEST PROTECTOR covers your ribs, heart, sternum, collarbone, etc .....and the SHIN GUARDS have plastic over the material like normal shin guards?

I wear the Force 3 and it should be renamed the Force shield unequal. I swear I have been hit everywhere but the protector since buying it. I replaced the straps with a delta harness and it doesn't move around, don't have to keep adjusting it. I feel safe wearing it.

As far as the shin guards, who in their right mind would put the foam outside? See any other manufacturers that do that? West Vest probably could have did that, but didn't. It wouldn't sell because it would look ridiculous.

Kind of like criticizing a movie without seeing it or badmouthing a restaurant while never actually eating there.

Stu, I think you're missing the point.

If the UE material is good enough to prevent injury to my sturnum, why wouldn't be good enough for my knee cap? If I can't feel a shot to my ribs (like my Platinum) why not cover my shins with the same material, and not be bothered with stiff plastic?

I've yet to read a single review of this contraption where someone states it's as good as a Gold. Just the opposite.

And I get your analogy. But unlike wasting two hours and $12, or eating a bad meal, I'll let someone else break their collarbone, and read about it instead. And I have read zero, ZERO reviews of this rig, where someone boasts of it protecting them. Oh sure, they feel safe, or think they're protected. But I saw the video of Jim taking a glancing blow, and read those stories of the students at his school never wanting to wear that thing. Then I think about that video of Joe West taking a fouled off heater to his chest, and not even flinching.

Look, there's a reason why everyone isn't sporting a Davishield (including Gerry Davis). Hey, it's fairly light, fits like a glove, is sorta a hard shell, and looks cool. I bought one, and loved it. Well, until I wised up, and had someone thump me with a ball at the end of a golf shaft. Oh, I yelped just like Jim (actually, I cursed like a longshoreman), and dropped that thing quicker than fourth period French. Then I came here, and reviewed it. I was glad I was able to be the crash test dummy for you guys on that one. Now Wilson they can't give them away.

Nope, I'm going with what I read here, and heading their advice. Years ago, I had a sub-par chest protector mess with my heart. Yeah, that's not happening again. Unless someone invents better protection that my Platinum, I'll stick with it. I'll probably hotrod one with TW pads, but that's what I'm sticking with until a better solution comes along.

"I've yet to read a single review of this contraption where someone states it's as good as a Gold. Just the opposite."

I'd have to disagree.  The only criticism and ridicule I've read about this chest protector is posted from people who've never used it, or who bought it and returned it without using it.  From the people who have been using it, it appears the reviews are all positive, if not glowing.  There are several guys on www.umpire.org who have been posting regular updates, many of which have taken serious shots to the chest and collar bone area and who rave about the protection.  As far as the Gold goes, there is even one post of a former Gold user who was bruised for several days from a shot with the WVG, and who took a similar shot with the Unequal and felt nothing but dispersed pressure.

I love my WVP, and have watched many a pitch bounce back toward the pitcher with it.  But that's not why I bought this new UE rig, nor the reason I'd rather have something other than a football style bulky chest protector.  I haven't used mine yet.  But I'm certainly looking forward to it.  I've also got the WVG shin guards, and have likewise never so much as felt an impact--balls all bounce back toward the pitcher.  However, the maneuverability of the WVG shin guards leaves much to be desired, and if UE comes out with some light weight tight fitting shin guards that protect while maintaining mobility, I'll probably also give them a shot.  Working a couple of two-man crew games on a hot Saturday (or the occasional solo game) where the ability to get from point A to point B in a hurry is important to making the right call would make me interested in checking out the UE shin guards when they are released.  If I were a Major league or NCAA plate umpire who could afford to stay rooted behind the plate (or who could afford to take his eyes off the ball to do a fancy turn to the right strike-three call--because he's got 2-3 other guys watching what's really going on), then I'd probably be content to continue wearing my bulky bullet-proof WVP chest protector and WVG shin guards.  But that's not the kind of games I work.  If the lighter gear could knock a second or two off my 90' Home to 3rd split time, then I'm very interested.  I have run around and sprinted with the UE chest protector on, and it's flipping awesome.  Now just need to lose the Gumby legs.

Wore my UE for a HS scrimmage last nigt and a JUCO ge today. Ball Repellant. I have not been touched. I am with Johnny I think it is actually a force field.

My partner also has a UE and he has never been hit either.

dear kylejt,

please allow me to take the time, again, to boast about the protection my F3UUUCP offers while simultaneously fitting MUCH MORE comfortable than any other "professional" level CP.

For some reason, you act like the repeated, direct, high velocity impacts I TOOK FOR YOU, and even captured on video so you could see with your own eyes, are not enough proof that kevlar can easily stop a baseball. Perhaps you think I don't get hurt because my junk is solid brass?

Nobody here has said this CP is "better than a WV" because I can tell you oranges are better than apples, but you will probably realize that that would be just one Florida cracker's opinion.

Also, please don't fool yourself and think that it hurts more when you aren't expecting it. If you are getting a shot, would you rather watch the needle go in your arm or look away til its over?

Finally, I will venture my guess as to why the unequal shinnys might not be kevlar-

it would be totally unnecessary. You don't need them to be any more form-fitting. They wouldn't be noticeably lighter. The level of protection is comparable. The only big difference between plastic and kevlar shins would be the production cost.

Another HS JV/V scrimmage last night. Once again I was not touched. Got another go around tonight and then later in the week. The unequal will be strapped on each time. I love to rotate my Douglas in, but I am going with the UE until I take a shot so I can report back. It is by far the most comfortable protector I have ever worn.

Ford, I hear ya. Good post. I personally am still a skeptic. I wondered about the shins because I would have EXPECTED them to not be plastic (don't know why I thhought that). But financially speaking, you're probably spot-on.

Does anyone have both an Unequal and a TW Retro? I'd love to see profile comparisons, as well as hear how they compare.

This would actually be pretty cool! Cant wait to hear the reports on the UE. So far this thing seems to be loaded with electromagnets that repelled baseballs.

Nothing came close tonight. Next chance will be Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

No hits again in an hour behind the plate with D2 pitching

I have an idea!!!  Next time instead of getting behind the catcher, get in front of the catcher! :smachhead:

I was "lucky" then. I got really whacked hard in the first inning of the first game when I got my WV Platinum. It was one of those shots that made both coaches come out the dugout to check on me. The ball rolled about 6-8' back towards the pitcher? I did have a nice ball mark right on the chest plate but no damage. Life is too short to wear inferior gear.

Man, I wore the thing again today and nothing got near the protector. I will let you know when I get hit.
