Does anyone know what stitch hats MLB umpires wear behind the plate and on the bases?

 

Is is 4 stitch behind the plate, and 6 stitch on the bases?

Varies. Some wear the beanie, some wear 4, some 6, some 8. Some guys who use a bucket don't wear hats.

The last MLB ump to wear a beanie was Ed Montague, who retired after 2009 season.

The standard hat now is all 6-stich. I don't believe New Era makes a 4-stich hat anymore for the exclusive MLBU caps. Plate or bases, they all wear a 6-stich now, unless they use HSM, then no hat on the dish.

Ed Hickox and Bill Welke, I think, rock 6 stitch caps under their MVP 4000's ....

 

Also, ....a few guys wear 8 stitch behind the plate, ... Joyce being one of them....

I really like my 8 stitch. The shorter bills seem to be less effective.

I'm not sure why anyone wanta to squeeze a hat under a bucket. One nice effect of wearing a bucket this year is that I didn't ruin any hats.

4,6, and 8 stitch are all used at the MLB level as well as the MiLB level. New Era makes all 3 versions and they are all available to the public if you can find a tore that carries them. Several guys are now starting to wear at hat underneath the bucket. I don't wear a bucket so I'm not sure how difficult it is to do but I think for the sake of professionalism it should at least be encouraged at the professional level.

Gentlemen, I usually don't announce my strike zone, but as you may have figured out, it's from ear to ear.

I wear a bucket and don't wear a hat. I haven't even tried. I do keep my hair short so that it doesn't look raggy when I take the bucket off.

Your hair isn't the problem when taking your bucket off.  It's that face made for radio.  Children have been known to run away screaming...
