  1. Hello fellow umpires: I bought a pair of New Balance 460 V3 Lo Cut Plate Shoes and they are about a size too big. They are size 10. I have never worn them on the field, wore them about 3 times trying to see if double socks would work, yet they did not. Please email me if you are interested. I can send pictures in email. I am asking $85.00. Thank you, Carter Caplan cjc377@drexel.edu
  2. Last night I was watching Greg Gibson work the plate. From my vantage point (not terribly close, down LF line) I noticed that he seems to initially set up a bit behind F2, then as F1 is about to release, he leans way forward and almost puts his chin on F2's inside shoulder. It was then that I realized that although he wears a bucket, he doesn't use a throat guard, and his neck is very much exposed when using that "look in" thing that he does.
  3. R3, 1 out, Fly ball to F8. Runner tags...and here is what happened. I know you want me on 3BX, but I have always done 1BX and can't break the habit. Offensive coach was asking about blocking the plate without the ball. I felt that F2 gave the back of the plate. I made the out call after seeing the ball. Any comments?
  4. So after years of wanting a plate coat but not willing to pull the trigger because of the price, I finally bit the bullet and placed an order with Honigs the first week in January for a B3S Plate Coat. I could just imagine putting it on for the first time with my Honigs Poly Wools and perfectly shined New Balance plate shoes - it would be like putting on a tuxedo! First class all the way! At least that is my opinion... To be fair, Honigs web site says "Plate coats are for sale by special order only. Delivery typically takes 12 weeks. Special order item - non-returnable." When I placed the order on the phone, I was told 8-12 weeks for delivery. While I hoped that it would come in 8 weeks, I expected 12 and did not start calling Honigs to find out the status until the full 3 months had passed. That is when the situation went from bad to WORSE. I understand that Honigs outsources the product and thus have little control on when the coat comes to them. However, they have full control over their customer service. I sent 3 e-mails to which I never received a response. I placed 5 calls to the Michigan office looking for someone who could update me on this. Each time I was told "let me check on that and I will call you back." I NEVER RECEIVED A CALL BACK IN ANY INSTANCE, which is unacceptable under any circumstance. Finally on call 6 (today) I was told that the coat should be at Honigs within 7-10 days. So here is the timeline I have been dealing with: January 7 - Order placed March 4 - 8 week point (Longshot - but based on Honigs statement on the phone, the first date that my coat might arrive) April 1 - 12 weeks since order was placed. First tried to contact Honigs via email April 6 - First call placed to Honigs April 23 - 6th call placed to Honigs. Told to expect 7-10 more days before it arrives at Michigan office. I expect this is business days and not calendar days. If I give Honigs the benefit of the doubt and it takes only 7 calendar days to get to the Michigan office, then 3 business days to ship to South Carolina, the earliest I might have it is May 5th. However, I think it is reasonable to expect at this point that the date will more likely be May 12th or beyond. That is 125 days, or just shy of 18 weeks!!!! And the best that Honigs will offer me is a $20 gift certificate towards my next purchase. Yep. Twenty whole dollars! Needless to say, Honigs will never see another penny from me. And if anyone out there has been looking for a 44 Long plate coat, keep your eyes on ebay. I'll even put the Honigs gift certificate in the pocket for you! By the way, the average temperature in South Carolina on May 12th is 83 degrees.
  5. Up for sale 2 pairs of Honig's PW size 38, 1 base 1 plate. $120 shipped PayPal as a friend.
  6. I worked with a young umpire recently who when working the plate called pitches 'ball high' 'ball low' 'ball inside'. He didn't do this consistently, only on borderline (apparently to him) pitches. After the game when he asked for feedback I told him this was not proper mechanics, as it invited "no, it wasn't' comments from coaches. He informed me that he went to a umpire school (name withheld) and he was taught this was the proper mechanic. He also referred to 3 NCAA College World Series umpires who allegedly used the same mechanic. Maybe I am just an old fart, but this doesn't make any sense. Why invite second-guessing? I'd be interested if any D-I umpires have been advised this is a proper mechanic. Thanks in advance.
  7. I have a new with tags Smitty brand long sleeve black four xl shirt that I'm willing to sell for 30.00 shipped PayPal as a gift, or will trade it for a new with tags 2XL Smitty brand long sleeve black shirt.
  8. Paul Schrieber was rocking a ThermaBase on the dish on Friday night in Boston ......    http://m.mlb.com/video/?content_id=32195419&topic_id=8879974
  9. http://m.mlb.com/video/v31970597/?query=cubs New plate collision rule in action. I like the spirit of the rule, but right here I think it might have been misapplied. The plate wasn't blocked until the catcher had already received the ball. This wasn't reviewed, but upon review I do believe the runner would have been safe anyway as you can see the ball come out of the glove and into the bare hand before the runner contacts the glove. The bare hand never touches the runner with the ball. The PU was totally blocked from this hence why I say he would've been safe on review anyway.
  10. This is the banner they give us on our Provincial (yes, I'm Canadian) baseball association. I find the positioning to be a way too far back and maybe to high, but this is the picture we see when we go to the site. Thoughts? (if it doesn't show a plate umpire, just refresh until it comes up.) http://www.baseballontario.com/umpires/
  11. I keep hearing about the two schools of thought about the different ways to keep your shoulders. Do I keep them square to the pitcher or do I have my shoulders facing inside? I was hoping for pros and cons about both. See attached pictures.

    MLB Umpire hats

Does anyone know what stitch hats MLB umpires wear behind the plate and on the bases? Is is 4 stitch behind the plate, and 6 stitch on the bases?
  13. Ruling question ... R1 is advancing from 3 to home. R1 jumps sideways to avoid tag. Is he out for jumping - or is he safe because he didn't jump over the catcher?
  14. 16. Ok guys we with WIDE Feet need some help! We need sources and brands of plate and base shoes. Seems like this year they are harder to locate. Please help!
  17. Hi guys. I'm a youth umpire, and am looking for feedback on my plate mechanics, timing, and basically anything else you can think of. Please don't be too harsh about my attire, because as a youth ump, I really don't have enough money to buy my own equipment, so I just use what the league provides. Any suggestions about affordable equipment, however, would be most welcome. Here are a few videos of me working the plate in a PONY game (11-12 yr olds). Please comment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfXOVl7ai1c
  18. Tim Timmons was using GD PL plate boots at last night Red Sox game.
  19. I am having a very hard time finding plate shoes that are big enough for me. I cant remember the website I ordered off last time I needed plate shoes so I am in distress. I can find size 15 onle on most websites. I need a size 17 EEE . Is there anyone out there who could direct me in the right place? It would be much appreciated. Thank you.
  20. Hey guys. Like most of you, I wanted to offer something in here before taking it to Ebay. These pants look almost exactly like the GD pants, except they don't have the 3 belt loops all close together. Same darker, non-smitty-blended color, same cut and style. Used but because of the dark color, they look great. Inseam is about 30-31 inches with some hem folded under. $37 shipped. PayPal.
  21. I am also in need of some plate/combo pants. Charcoal is the color and I need them a big 42 or a regular 44 with an inseam of 32/33. Any help is appreciated, just pm me.
  22. This is me behind the plate in a bronco game. I tried to incorporate the advice you gave me (wider stance, vocalize balls, don't call obvious fouls, say "foul" instead of "foul ball", ect.) Note the new gear . Alright guys, let me have it. Before you watch, 6:06 is my completely butchered attempt at a D3K mechanic . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJORdiDsB8A&feature=youtu.be
