  1. The Official Launch All-Star Cobalt line of umpire gear will be on Thursday 8PM EDT! Tune in to hear directly from AllStar’s Director of Product Development Stan Jurga Jr.
  2. I'm thinking of getting one but pricing and opinions are hugely variable. I'm more than happy with my current F3v2 mask as my daily driver, so to speak, but I'm still concerned about broken bats and other flying objects that could hit me in the side of the head, so I've been contemplating biting the bullet and grabbing a HSM to use in higher-level wood bat leagues. So far the ones in contention are (in order of preference) the F3v2 Defender HSM, the All-Star MVP4000, and the Wilson MLB Pro Stock. From my perspective, the F3v2 still has the upper hand because of the springs and the extra bit of steel that extends over the forehead area, à la Gary Cederstrom's custom Wilson cage, not to mention it's over $100 cheaper than the All-Star. I'm not terribly concerned about more weight from the HSM as I didn't find the extra weight much of an issue when I switched from my +POS Zero-G to the F3v2 so I suspect I'll be fine going to the heavier HSM-style anyway. Anyone have experience with any of these masks? Things I should know that I might have missed or might not have thought about?
  3. Anyone interested in my FM4000 throat guard?  It's seen a little wear, and it does have some "graying" ala the FM4000 finish.   These retail for $30: http://www.ump-attire.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=TG4000&Category_Code=FACE-MASK-ACCESSORIES&Product_Count=2   $20 shipped, or best offer, ... paypal only     Please PM me if interested, thanks!
  4. I have been seeing more guys in the pros wearing the All-Star FM4000. I have heard many good things i.e lightweight, durable, comfortable to wear. However, I have also heard many negative things about the mask i.e sparks fly when you get hit, the upper bar does not extend far enough out leaving umpires vulnerable. I know I have seen some guys wearing a matte skull cap with it. I like many of the positives but am concerned about some of the negatives. Two things: I am interested to hear what everyone's thoughts are about the mask Have you found anything that backs up or disputes the cons of the mask? Thanks guys!

    Face Value

In viewing clips of pitches and hits on mlb.tv, I have noticed a trend – MLB umpires are opting to a wider variety of masks rather than the default, formerly supplied Wilson DynaLite. We’re still seeing guys use the Wilson DynAlum and the occasional Wilson Titanium (Way Too) Low Profile, and there are those still relying on their Nike Icon Titaniums, but we’re also seeing increased numbers of Mizunos, Force3 Defenders, and All-Star FM4000MAGs. I’m sincerely wondering when that “paradigm shift” or “break point” is going to occur, when it is open season on branding gear with attributed logos instead of hiding, obscuring, or flat-out lying so as to appease a company that lethargically refuses to progressively protect their “sponsored” representatives. Because a knocked-off mask is viewed as a “failed mask”, MLB umpires – wearing Wilson -marked masks especially – are directed to wear their masks far too tight. Well, coincidentally, this plays right into Force3’s strengths, as the reactive spring suspension functions best when the mask is worn snugly. It’s just a shame that Force3 doesn’t receive due credit!
  6. All .... Here is a pair of All-Star LGU 2000 17" leg guards. Used pretty extensively, but still have some life. Make an offer I also have 2 UN-USED Shock Doctor standard cups that came with the Shock Doctor Leggings that Ump-Attire used to sell. Perfect if you have a bunch of young umpires just starting out. PM with interest ....... Paypal friends and family only Thanks .........
  7. Hey guys, there are a lot of members here who are mask addicted so I just thought I'd post some weights of some of the popular mask frames and accessories that I have, have had or tried. It might help you choose a back-up or lighten up your current rig a little. Every little bit helps. Though I can't attest to perfect calibration on my scale, I am using the same scale for each item so the differences in weight by comparison should be very accurate. Everything here is listed down from lighter to heaviest. Also, if you guys want to 'weigh in' your own items that aren't listed here, feel free. Frames Nike Titanium - 11.1 oz Rawlings Titanium - 11.5 oz +POS ZeroG - 12.5 oz All-Star FM25 Hollow Steel (with vinyl coating) - 14.6 oz Wilson Chrome Moliben (without vinyl coating) - 15.2 oz Wilson Dynalite Catcher/Umpire (with vinyl coating) - 18.7 oz Pads Diamond Quik-Dry Vinyl (Not 50/50 pads) (upper) - 0.9, (lower) - 1.3 oz +POS black mesh (upper) - 1.0 oz, (lower) - 1.4 oz +POS smooth tan leather (upper) - 1.0oz, (lower) - 1.4oz Nike (upper) - 1.1 oz, (lower) - 1.8oz All-Star Mesh (upper) - 1.6 oz, (lower) - 1.4 oz (Yep, I checked it twice, the upper is heavier than the lower pad) +POS new Classic Brown Leather (upper) - 1.4 oz, (lower) - 2.0 oz Rawlings LWMXTI (upper) - 1.8 oz, (Lower) - 2.1 oz Wilson Amara Suede (upper) - 1.9, (lower) - 2.6 oz Wilson Black Leather Wrap-around (upper) - 2.6 oz, (lower) - 3.9 oz Harness (es) (Harnessi?!) 8. To All, Another fantastic experience with customer service associated with our chosen Profession/Hobby! I ordered the All-Star MVP2510m (small head) Catcher/Umpire helmet on Sunday of this week (3/6/17). I received the helmet today (3/10/17). After examination of the helmet I discovered a gouge in the plastic. Almost as if they started to drill the hole for the screw in the wrong place, and purple paint on the silver guard. I contacted All-Star and spoke to Lisa. She had me send her the pictures of the defects. I let them know that I intended to use the mask as is on Tuesday. The spots aren't detrimental to the functionality of the mask. I just wanted to let them know, so they can be aware incase someone else has something like this. They advised me that they are sending me a new helmet and I can keep this one as a backup. Between All-Star and Force3, they have made this years experiences amazing getting ready for season and during the start of this season. http://all-starsports.com/mvp2500m.html Thanks All-Star!! Brent
  9. Hi all ... Odd request, but ....this forum has so much, I figured it's worth the question I'm looking for just a chin strap of a red bottom All-Star pad like the photo below .....thanks
  10. For the 2016 season, All-Star supplied one of its marquee sponsored catchers, Jonathan Lucroy, with a FM4000 mask. In the past, Lucroy had utilized the latest titanium models All-Star offered, typically the venerable FM25. This particular FM4000 looked a bit strange, though, appearing to have tin-foil clad ear struts and some of the cleanest welds I'd ever seen. That last photo, from the side, those bars look kinda... bloated... for being hollow steel. Turns out, it might not be a hollow-steel FM4000 after all... Lucroy was equipped with the ultra-brand-new Magnesium FM4000MAG: http://www.baseballmonkey.com/all-star-fm4000mag-magnesium-catchers-mask.html All-Star hasn't even listed it on their site yet; but then again, they didn't publish the 2015 FM25Ti either, leaving it to forum and discussion sites to show details about it.
  11. I recently replied to a message from a fellow umpire here on U-E regarding chest protector opinions. As I re-read it, what a I divulge is applicable to a great number of chest protector questions we the membership here get. His question was in regard to a Douglas, specifically, but I can express technical opinions about any of the CP's on the market. So, let me share this here with you... I present to you this rhetorical question: why are we as an umpire community clinging to antiquated technology and practices when modern, cutting-edge opportunities are not even being fully considered or realized yet? Or, better yet, why are we accepting this sloth and sluggishness from the gear producers themselves??! I hold Team Wendy in lofty regard because they actually established and progressed their own technology – Zorbium – for one ambitious goal: to mitigate, reduce and hopefully eliminate TBI's. The reason they pulled the plug on CP retrofits wasn't because TW is a money-grubbing company that saw no profit in it, or that Zorbium itself is a poor product. It simply is, that when the US military drops a massive product request on you, with an ironclad contract, you put everything else aside and go all-hands-on-deck. We really need to start examining the direction that our protection needs and solutions will go instead of settling for the "traditional" and "status quo".
  12. Hi all ... Looking for an All-Star harness.... either new, or slightly used .......thanks .......
  13. ump-attire is out of stock, called all-star they are out of stock and not expecting any until end of november. I have one on my gold but thinking about getting an unequal also and would like a delta flex harness on every chest protector I use. How can they be on backorder that long
  14. ***More Gear Will be Added to this Thread**** 1. Wilson WV Platinum (Size L/XL)- Used but in like new condition (around 15 games). Virtually no marks on the CP. SOLD 2. Original Wilson WV 13.5†Protector (WTA3209) - This is the original WV that Wilson made. It is new w/tags. It is not the current 3209, but the older one with the original WV graphics. Would be a great protector to use or have as a collectors item. There are some minor scratches on the service of the plates from storage, but this has not been worn in a game. SOLD 3. All-Star System 7 CP 15" (L) (CPU 4000) + Extra set New of CP padding Gear was used for about ½ of a season +/- 20 plate games. Gear is in good condition. Delta-Flex on the CPU is brand new and never worn. About a ½ to ¼ inch was removed from the neck area of the chest plate. It allowed for a little freer neck movement….I am one of those big/short necked people and stock this protector does not work well for people with a large neck. I will also include a brand new set of replacement pads for the CPU. SOLD 4. Double Knee Shin Guards 17" (S) (LGU 2000)- The shin guards show a little rust on the on the buckles, but are in good shape. 5. Wilson WV Gold (L/XL)- Older model with the late WV on the chest. In good shape. A great candidate to purchase if you are thinking of a Team Wendy Upgrade. SOLD Nothing is wrong with any of this stuff. I have a bunch of gear and I need to cut back on what I don’t use. I would feel comfortable wearing any of this gear at any level I umpire (LL, HS, JUCO, NCAA DIII). Please PM me if you have any questions. Check my record on the transaction experience thread. Paypal only (send money to a friend so everyone avoids fees). I might put some on Ebay, but trying here first. I like to keep good gear in the family.
  15. FOR SALE: All-Star System 7 Chest Protector (size L - 15"). I've owned this CP for almost two years and have used it for 30-40 games. Overall in great shape. The top of the logo has faded a bit, but everything else is great. Asking $110 (shipping included).
  16. All ... You've seen a lot of talk about the All-Star FM25 .... here's a great opportunity for a 'custom project' mask, or, just to try one out for yourself!   http://www.ebay.com/itm/ALL-STAR-FM-25-EXT-CATCHERS-UMPIRE-MASK-I-BAR-VISION-ADJUSTABLE-STRAPS-BASEBALL-/221429206048?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item338e358c20#ht_82wt_1105
  17. I would like to get some opinions on which is the better helmet. Wilson shock FX 2.0 titanium/steel vs. All-stars system seven
  18. I'm getting the all-star FM4000 (aka: system 7) mask. I hear a lot of TW pads. I was wondering if someone can tell me 100% that they will fit? The problem is, the FM4000, the top is curved to fit the forehead.

    Good Mask

I currently have the FM2000UMP and I like it because of the curved forehead pad that fits nicely against my forehead. I looked at the Wilson line and it`s not shaped like that. My all-star is 18.5oz. The FM4000UMP is a little bit lighter, but is it worth it? I only got my FM2000UMP last year.
  20. I use the All-Star metal indicator, have for the past couple of years. Mine has acquired a nice "patina", losing some of the shine and actually corroding a bit from sweat on the back side to the point where I get some grip on it. In any case, I got ready to start the first of 2 games behind the plate Wednesday night and realized that I had left my indicator in the gear bag. I don't use an indicator on the bases, but I do on the plate and I contemplated going without one here and decided not to. I asked my partner if he had his, he did and thankfully he let me borrow it - a metal Markwort with plastic wheels. Took a bit to get used to it as it has the standard round wheels and reads 4 balls/3 strikes/3 outs, but all was good. What struck me was how smooth the wheels turned and how positive the clicks were. Got home and decided to disassemble my All-Star. Cleaned all the wheels and springs first with soap and water and then some fine sandpaper where there was buildup or corrosion. Put it back together and it is better than new. No more rough turning of wheels. There, that feels better now...
