  1. About as easy as it gets. 14u travel tournament at a popular turf complex in jersey (most locals know where im talking about) backwards k to end the inning and the batter draws a line where he thinks the pitch was. easy toss. the HC actually came down and inexplicably asked me to show him the line. i stared at him blankly for a good 5 seconds until he understood and walked away!!

Thats pretty impressive. Im interested in the details. I had one two pitches in thought that would be tough to beat.
  5. @noumpereim stealing that line
  6. im guessing by the looks of the field that this is a HS game and obviously i dont have the best look but that angle looks like a hybrid from F1
  7. Jerry is done for the year. He had successful surgery for 2 bulging disks. He is expected back on the field in 2020 per Bob Davidson.
  8. @grayhawkThats fantastic that your getting out on the field. It will be emotional but soak it in cause you've earned it.
  9. @Biscuit@BlueRanger couldn't agree more guys...i did this all through college, joined the local HS assoc in the area and umpired at a tournament site nearby. I always made my class schedule with umpiring in mind. Class in the am, umpiring in the afternoon, and "extra-curriculars" at night. Cant beat it for a college kid.
  10. +1...i dont do it myself but Ive heard nothing but positives about volleyball...I know @Kevin_Kdoes volleyball here in Jersey. Im sure he could offer you some mroe insight

    Dealing with coaches

Not sure about your area but around here the high school baseball conference is a pretty tight community. All the coaches know each other and all the umpires. If your a newcomer expect a "feeling out" process so to speak where the HCs will try to work you and see what they can get away with.
  14. Running down the line screaming about balls and strikes = no warning. I'm running him for that. Ehh it happens to the best of us. Just have to work harder on biting your tongue. Good job in having your partners back especially when that partner is a newer teenage umpire. As someone who was that newer teenage umpire, trust me its appreciated.
  15. Im agreeing with everything maven said. However, let me add a couple things. Once the coach is ejected do not continue to engage him. If you have the luxury of a partner he should be rodeo clowning him off the field. If you are alone in this case, I would go to the assistant and tell him that the HC has been ejected and needs to leave the visual proximity of the field. Secondly, you say in the above post "I was then afraid for my safety." If you are genuinely afraid for your safety and you are working without a partner in a game where there is no game administration present (I am assuming from your post that there was no one else there) I would not hesitate to call law enforcement. Its better to have them there and not need them, than vice versa. Its a tough situation to be in but you can always take something away as a learning point from these types of situations. And as maven says keep calling strikes!!

    why we do it

This Sat was my opening day for HS (prep schools start before 4/1 for the jersey guys out there) and let me tell you it was one of those days where you are reminded why we love this game and why we do what we do. 70 and sunny (cant remember the last time I wore short sleeves for a march game if ever) well pitched and well played. I've gotten to know both coaches well and they were their usual respectful selves. After a really great game decided late all players on both teams went out of their way (we were halfway out the door not sticking around for handshakes) to come over and thank me and my partner for our time. What a day, what a game. Just one of those that instantly puts you in a great mood and reminds you why we do it. For all the long car rides, the asshole parents, the time we sacrifice, and the work we put in, yesterday was a day where it was obvious why we do it. And to all my brothers in blue in jersey, happy opening day! PS- best part the game was an 11 am first pitch. By 12:50pm me and my partner were drinking an adult beverage (or two) at a rooftop bar enjoying the warmth. 1:30 to start the year, not too shabby

    ridiculous

For me I think its a little bit of both. Im fortunate to have one big tournament site that does attract very good talent in the summer and the coaches are generally pretty mellow at the 17U and 18U level because the primary goal of the tournament is exposure not competition. Of course some lower level stuff is mixed in there but for the most part its pretty good. This wasn't there tho. This was a lower level travel league that I have slowly been getting away from for reasons like this. I still do games for that league from time to time but nowhere near what I used to. For the most part tho my weekdays are gonna consist of legion, and a NCAA summer league I got aligned with this year. Partner was right there with me attempting to rodeo clown.

    ridiculous

In the top of the 6th the Batter-Runner was ruled out for Running Lane Interference. The HTHC came out to dispute and was warned twice for being overly demonstrative before finally being told to return to the dugout to resume play. He then responded by screaming loud enough for everyone on and around the field “You’re out of your F*#King mind.” He was then ejected. Despite his own players attempting to hold him back to end the situation the coach sidestepped them and continued following me yelling “You are a goddamn joke to the game” and “You F*#King suck” before finally leaving the after being told that terminating the game would be the next step. At the beginning of the next half inning he was again instructed by myself and my partner through the assistant coach of the team that he needed to be out of sight and sound of the field and not merely sitting in the bleachers. He then finally left while loudly and profanely ranting regarding my partner and myself. If you wanted to make a youtube video titled "textbook example of RLI" this would've fit the bill. Kid was no closer to the line than 3 feet in fair territory the whole way and the throw drilled him in the helmet 5 feet from the bag. This guy actually brushed off his kid to continue going at me. Its always an abrupt change going from HS back to travel (daddy) ball once the HS season is over and I got a taste of it yesterday. Guess this is what its going to be like once my HS season ends this week. PS- Did I violate NJSIAA rules saying I have a HS game this week lol
