I guess I didn't screw up enough the first three go-arounds.  So they brought me back and this year I'm the crew chief for the American Legion World Series.  The games will be August 15-20.  They should be on one of the ESPN networks, again (usually ESPN U).

Congrats!

If you have any games on the evening of the 15th, let me know. I might drive over and watch. Unfortunately, I'm busy the other days.

How many crews do they have for the ALWS? Just found out yesterday that the best umpire I've had work my games, and the best umpire I've worked with is umpiring the ALWS.

Congrats. You are getting to be an institution there.

Does this mean you get more pictures with Miss USA?

One can only hope.

Awesome  mile-stone! Congrats!

If this is your 3rd time on ESPN, do you now have to get a SAG card?

Two Legion play-off games are available on my TV package this afternoon and evening. Anyone know if lawump is on either game?

at 2nd base styling for the 2nd game. 4th inning Louisiana vs Missouri-Louisiana 9-0. they have a mercy rule, but I do not know if that is 10 runs after 5 or what. Missouri guy out at home just now.

Well, if there is any doubt if the Crew Chief opens the ALWS, here is the proof.

Nice 1:44 game with a lot of runs. So, it is possible to move a high scoring game along in today's game.

I will let you finish the WS in peace now. Enjoy and congrats to your whole crew on the honor of working the ALWS.

Congrats on working the ALWS again, the crew looked solid in the games that I watched.  Too bad there were so many rain delays but what can ya do.  Since it's been in the news a bit that Legion participation is down quite a bit in some areas of the country, just wondering if you are noticing a weaker ALWS field in recent years?

Not really.  AL is growing in some areas of the country (while definitely shrinking in other areas).  It all evens out.  With that said, I think last year's teams were better than this year's teams.

The most frustrating things for me this year were:  (1) No one can bunt.  I honestly believe that for every 10 bunt attempts, only one was successful.  (The ratio may have been even worse.) (2) The number of dropped foul pop-ups.  Some of them were pretty damn easy to catch, but were dropped.

With that said, there were also some pretty darn spectacular defensive plays (diving catches by outfielders, especially), and a lot of home runs (and this park has some pretty deep fences).  One kid hit a 417-foot bomb to straight away center field (which has a fence that is 400-feet from home).  (They used computers and cameras to calculate the distance of each home run...just like on the ESPN MLB broadcasts.  The PA Announcer would give the distance...usually as the batter was still circling the bases.)  My first plate job had 5 home runs (three were opposite field).

There were a number of players going to play Division 1 baseball, and one pitcher (for Idaho) who was an early round MLB draft pick after his senior year of high school.  So there was definitely talent on the field, as evidenced by the number of scouts in attendance.
