Question

Hi. I just read that if the pitcher is not on the rubber and the catcher gives the pitch signals it is a balk?

How true is this statement?

A. Depends on rule set.

B. If he persists after warning (OBR), it's an ejection, not removal from the mound.

C. This should just about never be enforced.

It seems that this debate goes on and on....I had this case in my French league last week. The umpire called a balk...

It is written nowhere that taking signs from the catcher is a balk if F1 doesn't make contact with the rubber, no? It's a balk if it generates a fastpicth for example.

Probably this:

Pitchers shall take signs from the catcher while in contact with the pitcher’s plate.

Rule 8.01 Comment: Pitchers may disengage the rubber after taking their signs but may not

step quickly onto the rubber and pitch. This may be judged a quick pitch by the umpire. When the

pitcher disengages the rubber, he must drop his hands to his sides.

Pitchers will not be allowed to disengage the rubber after taking each sign.

Rule was put in place to keep pitchers from quick pitching.. im not calling it unless I think hes doing it for that reason.

I talk to F2 about that one. Ask them not to give signals until pitchers on the rubber

Wouldn't an ejection remove him from the mound?

Depends on how long his limbs are...

FED wants it balked (if runners) -- but I can't provide a reference right now.

NCAA wants it to be a ball -- 9-1f "If the pitcher takes a sign from other than a legal position, the pitch shall be called a ball." (Which I don't think they really mean wait for the pitch)

6-1-1 PENALTY

I would never call this, mainly because I have no idea whether or when he's taking a sign.

I would certainly penalize a quick pitch, though I usually prevent them by killing it when he comes set before the batter is ready.

I have only called this once in my life.

Lefty straddling rubber, vigorously shaking head as if he is shaking off sign, snaps a throw to first.

Maybe I grabbed the wrong end of stick on that one...
