So, use the stock pads until you get a concussion, then switch to the improved ones. Got it.

If I were using a bucket, I'd modify it with TW combat helmet inserts availible on eBay for less than $20. The forehead pads on most HSMs are pretty worthless. The System 7 ones are better, but I'd still modify them with better technology.

Ed Hickox looked good sporting the Allstar in last nights Redsox game in Seattle. I really like the look of it. I have used the old Allstar and never had one complaint. I went back to traditional mask but might look at picking one of these up in the future.

That's not a stock All-Star chin pad...I wonder what it is.

It is the same special chin pad I have in mine.

Along with other padding, (which includes a forehead pad) made for those of us that have had a few concussions and really need the extra protection.

The extra padding pushes the mask farther away from your face and also requires changing the straps in the back.

Unless you have had concussions before, you really do not need the pads Hickox or I am using from AllStar.

The stock pads are perfectly fine for the normal population.

I also wear a 4 seam hat under my MVP2500.

You might want to look into going this route. Not saying you have to, but just want to give you options to be all you can be in your protection going forward.

Yes, but do each have this new technology inside their helmets???

Are they wearing the Dome

Do they have X Max inside or X pads or the Gyro if it will fit.

Seems like just the bucket is not enough anymore and the extra protection now available should also be used in conjunction with the helmet, whether one has had previous problems or not.

I asked Brad from All-star about Hickox padding when I ordered mine.

Due to his history of concussions and Injuries (see lawsuits against Wilson) all of the padding in his helmet is custom.

I think Brad's words were that Hickox's helmet would stop a tank.

Word is Ed suffered a concussion last Friday in L.A. I guess it just goes to show that no matter how much you try to cover everything there is always that off chance of injury. Hopefully he recovers quickly. He is certainly starting to rack up the head injuries.

I personally use a Traditional mask. I have the All-star FM2000UMP and the FM 4000UMP. Needless to say, I prefer All-Star. From what I have heard, the All-Star MVP is much more comfortable and has better vision. The Wilson's flex cage, is a neat gimmick, but it actually reduces the pressure points to just the side and that is worse than the all-star cage. That means that the force isn't distributed over the whole helmet, just on the side. Remember, force isn't stopped, it is transferred. You will feel it more in your neck with the Wilson. If you can afford the All-star MVP4000 titanium, it is well worth it. But if you are interested, the all-star FM4000UMP is so light, you really can't feel it and the vision is amazing.

I have the All Star FM4000 and I know how the fit should be, but what is the correct fit on an HSM? Slightly loose like the traditional mask or tight?

Your chin should be snug to the chin pad...forehead comfortably touching that padding as well...

I have both the 4000ti and the 4000sl. Vision is better (by a little bit) on the ti. You do pay a premium when it comes to the price. The bars of the ti are all small and round, but the some of the bars on the sl are flat (since they are a bit bulkier it helps improve the field of vision.)

To me, the weight difference is almost negligible the way the helmet is supported by your head there is almost no feeling the difference. I personally love the look of the ti cage better.

Can't go wrong either way. I love both of my MVP4000s

I'm not a fan of the HSM at all after trying them a few times on the field. I do like the way the All-Star fits better than the Wilson and I will say it looks about as good as a HSM on an umpire can look which is more than I can say for the Wilson. I do prefer the vision on the Wilson over the All-Star though. Most would probably disagree since the top cross bar on the Wilson is more visible then the All-Star but I actually like that about it. Not having the cross bar in front of my face where I can see it is a little awkward to me. I don't know which one offers better protection and I'm yet to be convinced that a HSM actually protects any better than a traditional mask but I'm not a head force trauma specialist so that really isn't saying much. Also the fact that you can wear a hat under the All-Star more easily than the Wilson makes it a clear winner for me. You can manage a hat with the Wilson as well but it's more of a challenge. Some would say that wearing a hat under a HSM isn't really necessary but I would disagree. Without a hat on an umpire looks incomplete IMO.

Add another tally to the All-star side. I have the mvp2500 and love it. Great vision, I've had it for two years and I've barely felt a shot yet - everything's seemed to deflect. Another plus of the all-star over the wilson - the pads are washable.

I don't find the stock pads to be uncomfortable - they're smooth where your chin touches it, so its not uncomfortable.

My only complaint is that HSMs generally just look too bulky, IMO.

Also, the cage has the same finish as the fm4000, and its turned a dull grey color. I don't know if that would happen with the TI.

I have a 2.0 and I'm not crazy about it. I don't care for the chin pad or the way it sits on the top of my head. Maybe it's the shape of my head, but it really just doesn't seem right.

I think I'm going to buy an all-star 4000 this year (if anyone wants to trade something for one, please feel free to contact me), so I may have more input in 2014.

I want to add another comment. It seems with the shape of the Wilson (round and fitting closer to your head) its POSSIBLE that the plastic is more likely to come in to contact with your head than the All-Star. The All-Star SEEMS to be shaped better to disperse the force. Just my thoughts...

Where do you get the pads or does all star custom make them?

I'll throw my $.02 in. I have to side with the Wilson here. I have used it for 2 seasons and absolutely love it. I borrowed a buddy of mine's MVP2500 for a scrimmage game and took a couple of shots on foul tips and felt dazed after taking the second shot. Kinda scary, and I have take tons of shots to my Wilson and have never had such a feeling as I did when I took that one with the All Star. Secondly, I have a rather large noggin and the Wilson sits better on my head than the all star did. Everyone else seems to love the All Star so if I were in your shoes I would try the All Star first, but don't write the Wilson off completely. It's still a very well made helmet.
