That would be a little far-fetched don't you think? . . . if they can't throw a ball to the PU from the infield, maybe they shouldn't be in the game. SJA :-(

they're there to call. Not throw. I rarely throw baseballs. My arm is gone.

I found out why they put the foul balls in their shirt, its what they are told to do. She had no clue it was caught on ESPN and certainly wasn't thrilled about it, as the umpires don't want to be the center of attention.

Tuesday Cynthia has the dish at 1 PM on ESPN with a consolation game between Great Lakes vs. Czech Republic.

They need to tell Leslie that the umpires aren't supposed to be the center of attention!!!

Guess who's back on the Puerto Rico vs Chinese Taipei on ESPN. He should keep it interesting, very interesting.

Batter asks for time. PU calls time, steps out and takes his mask off (using the cage). Then he looks at the batter, puts his mask back on and then steps back in to put the ball in play.

Of course, his first strike call lasted about 10 seconds. WHY WHY WHY are they giving this guy another plate? I asked the same question of a former WS umpire. He said they all get two, evidently somebody told him to back it down, it was much less noisy after the second inning.

ESPN changed his mic level, and adjusted it as soon as he began to vocalize. When there is a lull in the commentating, or if they want to give the home audience a taste of the atmosphere, they turn different volumes up and down to fill dead noise/build the sensation. They also monitor annoyances and minimize that picking up and broadcasting.

So he was his same old flamboyant self, some poor chap just had to keep flipping his volume every pitch.

I haven't watched a lot of the LLWS games, but from the little I've seen I noticed something else: When a ball is fouled out of play, the PUs always seem to follow it for an inordinate amount of time, and often take their masks off to follow it.  i don't get that.  Just hand the catcher a new ball and go on.

We have to know where the ball went, because someone's helpful little brother will probably try to throw it back onto the field.  It's probably not applicable on this stage, but you can see where the bad habit comes from.

I've also noticed that they prefer to throw a new ball to F1 rather than just handing a new one to F2.  When F2 is going to the backstop to get a foul ball, this is fine, but when a foul goes back out of play or down the line, just hand F2 a new one.

CDP tells you to do this also. To save time.

I thought on Aug 17th the PU who did the New England vs Northwest game at 2PM was the most solid of the tournament. He finished the game with an excellent 3K to end the game. What do you guys think?

I'm watching MI vs Czech Republic right now and the gal on the plate (Cynthia is her name, I believe) is doing a very good job,  Maybe a little robotic, but she's solid, has a good zone and no quirks.  She's representing well.

Watching that guy working yesterday was as painful as seeing Rolo in CDP:wave:

Ouch!!!!

She called the no-hitter last week in the CA/MI game and is blogging about the series:

His delivery is, well, stupid, but the pictures shown with that article show how wide the zone has been for some of these umpires.

I don't get why these people feel the need to call strikes this far off the plate.  Perhaps they don't realize they are...

Saw her behind the plate. Very good job. Strike zone was pretty big. But her timing was good.

I've just been chastised on another list for being too critical of the umpire shown in the video upthread.  You know, the screecher with the 36-inch strike zone.

Actually, the person sent me an email telling me that "I've seen some of your regional TV performances and you should clean up your own acts first."

Now, I know some of you people watched my game on TV last season.  WTH is this guy talking about?

I've pretty much decided to hop off the LL train after this season.  I'll still help with the tournaments locally, but I'm not "chasing the dream" anymore.  So unlike others, I'm not afraid of being put on some naughty list based on my commentary.  I just don't get why it's so positive for people to be put in positions where they fail.  It's bad for the kids, it's bad for the umpires.

Here LL is using instant replay to correct everything they can on the field and they have no quality control for the most important aspect of the game -- the strike zone.

Is there some video out there of this?

On my DVR, yes. :)

I think there was a thread on UE where observations were posted, too.

You know, what more can we expect from them, they are after all, 'only volunteers'......

I'm a volunteer, too.  When I hit the field, I don't even consider how much money I'm getting for a game.

Not sure I've ever made more than $200 for a game I've worked, so in the scheme of things, why should I work any different?

Very good point. Lets correct everything but the 36" strike zone. Sad

I was being sarcastic, of course. However, that seems to be the LL approach, accepting poor officiating with the 'they are just volunteer' disclaimer.
