All I know is that Kevlar stops bullets.

I have Glock. I'd be happy to test it on you!

All I know is that Kevlar stops bullets.  Until I get hit and feel it, I'm going to keep wearing it.  I'll report back.  Promise.
But Kevlar does not stop a knife. Just because it is good for one thing does not necessarily transfer over to all things. I don't like the science of the UE. The energy needs to go some where. It is either reflected, absorbed or adsorbed. One leaves a mark/bruise. Good luck.

baseballs are more like bullets than knives or arrows. If it ends up not working out, I will use one of my other 4 CP's.  No skin off....but if it does, it's going to be awesome!

It's America, so wear what you want.

When I started out, I wore a ribbed protector. In a 10u game, I took a square shot to the chest. I was goofy, and off balance for days. My wife's uncle (one of the three fellows who invented modern CPR, and a pretty good heart surgeon) said the blow messed with my heart's electrical system.

Since then, I wear pro gear. Hard shell protection that laughs at shots to my chest, not make me yelp like a school girl, or get bruised in the process.

To me, the Unequal is unproven. They brag about it being superior, but no one that has one has ever stated that here. Read about what the umpires at Evan's camp said about it. Watch the video of the guy taking shots in the cage. Then, find that video of Joe West taking a fouled off fast ball square on, and not even flinching. THAT'S what I'm looking for in protection. Now, if someone can top that, by being lighter, slimmer or cooler, I'll buy it. I'm not worried about the price tag, just the protection.

As for the catchers c/p, they're in a completely different position, and very rarely take a ball directly to the chest. Yeah, they take those 58' curveballs, but that's a different story.

56' curveballs? Seen plenty of college catchers take 56' 85 mph fastballs trying to protect me. I haven't purchased one yet, but I will in the near future. I have communicated with Jason a number of times and he says if he didn't believe in it he wouldn't be endorsing it. I have seen them in action and they can take a shot with the best of them. Also thin enough that it looks like you're not wearing one.

Did Jimmy get hurt testing the prototype? I heard rumors (exclusively on this forum) but never anything substantial.

Señor Conlan asked did I get hurt at all in the batting cage. To answer simply: no. I started with 70 mph softballs and moved to 85 mph baseballs. Although only a few are on video, I took a dozen shots each day, all over the protector. The only shot that hurt hit my thigh (ouch).

I was sceptical. I pre-ordered, but not until I knew they would let me test it and return it if I wasn't satisfied. I am satisfied. I never think about it when I have it on. I would never go back to my hardshell protector and I promise, several months removed I don't miss the money I would have saved buying a WV instead. The way I figure, $200 worth of space-aged kevlar and closed-cell foam is better value than $150 worth of plastic and sponge. 'sides, daddy always said, "$50 helmet for a $50 head".

My very favorite part: it is made in the USA

Going to wear mine tomorrow night for a HS Scrimmage and then on Saturday for a JUCO game. Hopefully my ball repellant is working.,,,although I kind of want to get hit to see.

Slo8140,

Please report back with experience -- even thought I hope you don't get nailed.

I bought one and had fellow umpires throw a baseball at me from 6 feet away (so they wouldn't miss). The CP did not seem to alter the impact force sufficiently. In one place, where the impact was on my sternum, I could still feel it several days later, like a light bruise. I did the same to several partners while they were wearing it. These throws were, realistically, about 45-50mph (maybe). One of the guys who tried it on is a 30 year old ex-college player who's fairly fit & tough. His take: "Ouch, don't do that again". Sent it back. I admire these guys for trying to come up with a better product for umpires. Maybe it'll work for others. My take: Good idea, wrong material. A baseball is not a bullet.

I put the unequal to the test again last night at the D2 level for about an hour of scrimmage ball.

Didn't get hit.

The thing is a ball repellant!

This must be the greatest CP ever!

I hope you get hit 5-6 times! Couple on the chest and a couple on each shoulder. Good Luck!

I did see the shin guards in Chicago.  Those have promise.  They're pretty sweet.

Will the Unequal shin guards be soft, like their chest protector? If not, why not?

I asked myself the same question.you saw them? Were they plastic over pads, or just th UE pads?
