Foul tip .....

Yesterday, ... 18u Pastime Tournament .....

 

R1, no outs, count is 1-0 ....

 

Pitch comes in .... foul tip, ... F2 fires down to first to try and get F1 leading off too much .....

 

As F2 readies and fires .... the batter (who was their pitcher) says ... "I tipped that" and watches the play on R1 at first, then looks back at me as I finish my foul tip mechanic ..... he says it again "I tipped that" .....I said ..." I know" ....he keeps staring, so I say the only thing I can think of that he's confused about is ....  "that's a live ball" ...........  batter, surprised ...  "OH, ...really?"   I nod and say ..."yes sir"

Reminds me of the time a catcher one hopped a swinging third strike.  Batter takes off and the catcher says, "I caught it!"  I quickly said, "No you didn't!"  He throws down and gets the out.  After the play, he said, "I caught it clean - one hopped it right off the dirt."  I went on to explain the rule and he was dumbfounded.  He had no idea how it worked.  This was a varsity catcher.

 

And THAT, my friends, is why we shouldn't refer to these as "dropped" third strikes.

Heard a similar thing recently, but the opposite. Batter tipped the ball, catcher caught it cleanly while R1 was heading over to second and would be in there with miles to spare. Catcher turned and asked me, "Isn't that a foul ball?" Uh, no. No, it's not.

 

Who's teaching these guys the rules of the game?

How about instead of the D in D3K standing for "dropped" it should be "dirt" or "dirty"? Because that is exactly what it is......the ball touched dirt.

We are.  One player / coach at a time.

 

It's a tough battle when the talking heads are (mis-)teaching to millions at a time.

Unfortunately, as @noumpere has said. The media is the teacher of the masses. And when the MLB website titles last night's A's/Angels obstruction ruling as interference in their highlights, and literally every announcer in the country calling fouls "foul tips", we have an uphill battle to say the least.

In my case I don't like to stop play to brush plate and hold up a game except when absolutely necessary. So my plates usually have some dirt on them and dirty3K applies 95% of the time.

We get the foul tip, uncaught third strike questions a lot.  In a HS varsity game had batter swing, ball hit him.  Batter takes off towards first, defensive coach comes out of the dugout,  and I am standing there calling time.  I tell the defensive coach to stand fast, he was going to like what was coming.  I call the batter back to the box, call a strike.  Defensive coach smiles and goes back to the dugout.  Offensive coach comes down says the ball hit his batter, I said yes sir sure did, but he swung at it.  He comes back with , are you sure that is the rule?  Got to love it, wanted to say no, just made it all up.
