how is the level of protection? I wouldnt mind finding a replacement for my WV Gold which is over 10 years old. The backup padding sounds like a good idea as well.

IMO the All Star is equal to the Wilson Gold and Platinum as well as the now unobtainable Douglas. I would expect to see some of the MiLB wearing these this Summer.

Thunder, how far down does the CP sit on your chest/ribs? I have measured from the notch in my throat to the bottom of my sternum. The 12 seems like it will fit correctly. I'm 6'2" and 15 just seems too long...

Was looking at the photos of the CP on Ump-Attire earlier. I know the velcro for the WV goes through the plastic but I couldnt see how the padding comes off of the System-7. Does it just pull off or what?

The 12 measures 12 TOP of neck to bottom. The sides come down another inch. There is no way a 15" would be too long for someone 6'2", but, we're all built differently........

It does, it just pulls off the back!

Interesting. Would love to see one in person before I buy but I dont think anyone out here on the West Coast sells them.

My allstar CP just came in, I am 5'9" 220lbs. I ordered the 12 inch, it covers more of my bottom ribs than my WV Platnium did. I think the 15 would have been to long for me. I started back to the gym in December, if I get the other 20lbs off my fat belly, there will be no question about the fit. It is not tight around the neck, like I had read on some other reviews, but I can see how the material will rub your neck a little raw, got to figure something out to do about that.

Hi - new to the forums, and a second year umpire. Decided to buy my own gear this year instead of using the league supplied gear. I ordered the System 7 CP in 12" and just received it yesterday. I think it will be to short for me as it just barely covers my bottom ribs. I will take pictures and post in a bit. I'm 6' 220lbs, but have a long torso and a short inseam (31"). It will probably cost more money to ship it back and exchange it than to just buy the 15" and sell this locally. I might call 1 or 2 games just to see for sure. I'm in southern california (Orange County) if anyone is interested in picking up the 12" at a discount.

If it covers the bottom of your ribs, you're fine. I'm 6'1" and have worn a 12" Gold before and I was fine. The All-Star is supposed to be longer than the Gold.

Covering the bottom rib is perfect sizing. That's exactly what you want it to do.

Remember to judge your protection when you're in your stance, not when standing upright. I'm 6'1", 185, and my Platinum just touches my last rib. Plus, my left arm sits underneath my c/p in my stance, so i'm covered. I can't imagine another 3" of c/p on my current rig. so when the 12" carbon fiber model comes out (come on, Brad!), I'm all over it.

Kyle, ...not sure I understand the Carbon Fiber obsession? Can you expound?

It was something they were looking at, and would have lightened up the rig, and dialed up the cool factor by a power of 10. In the end, I guess it was cost prohibitive. Too bad, as the samples I was privy to would have made it one badass looking c/p.

I agree on all the points above. It would likely add $200 to the cost and the change in weight would be minimal. I even thought about using my Douglas as a pattern to create a CF shell. The main plates are not an issue but the curved shoulder caps would be very costly or take some real talent to mold. Using 3/16th plate CF for just the two main plates was <$200. Tempting but I had a bad experiance drilling the rivets out of my Wilson Charcoals SG that I quickly talked myself out of it. What "we" really need is a donor CP or some donor parts from Douglas.

The drill bit must be very sharp and make sure to drill a pilot hole. If the bit works too hard it will create heat and melt the plastic. This happens quickly. The other technique would be to take a dremel tool and grind the back off. I used an epoxy to fill in the holes then sanded them smooth. As you can tell from the post above, since hindsight is 20/20, I would just cut them off if I was to do it again.

im almost 6-2 and the 15 inch all star CP is not too big....i would prefer a 16inch version...i have short legs and long torso...my fellow blue bought the 12 inch all star CP and sold it cause it was too short...he is only 5-10...i just cant get over how heavy it is...almost four pounds..wow ...with all this high tech technology u think they could find materials much lighter with great protection

I have a 14" Champro soft shell. I am 6'2" and weight 275 with a 32" inseam. So I am somewhat long torso'ed...The 14" CP I have hits me well below my ribcage. How far down does the 15" go on your chest...just to the bottom of your sternum or does it extend below that?

To be honest guys .... it doesn't really matter how much you weigh, or how tall you are ....because everyone is built different....

I'm 5' 11" 225 ish ......

here I am last July walking off between innings .... you can see the 15" doens't come THAT low on me ...
