World Series - Game 2

So what did every one do before gloves were ever allowed and did that look bad and did anyone care back then when it was freezing at the beginning of the year and the end of the year with playoffs. Don't believe there were as many facial remedies either. Maybe the old thermals underneath the uni and that was it.

Don't know what they used to do, but that doesn't really matter does it? It's just an observation, everyone's making more of it than I am. My personal opinion is, it makes you look disinterested, like ho hum. I know he doesn't feel that way or wasn't feeling that way yesterday but that's how that appears

Part of my job is going to conventions and working a show floor and answering questions. I stand anywhere from 3 to 5 hours at a time on the floor answering questions comma and I never once stand there with my hands in my pockets because we were told not to. Represent the company and look like you care.

I have a funny feeling that had this occurred in the Little League WS, Gooch would be getting ripped a new one and would have few defenders.

For what its worth, I noticed it right away and, IMHO, it looks like crap.  (And don't get me wrong, Gooch is a hell of an umpire and he had a great game last night...but, it still looked like crap.) 

Several of us college umpires were texting one another last night during the game.  We felt that there was a glaring difference in comparing Game 1 with Game 2: Vanover looked so much better wearing a plate coat, compared to wearing the zip-up thermal with hands in the pants pocket.  To be honest, I said that last night (game 2) it looked like one of our local youth league smitty's had been assigned to the World Series.

Now with that said, I can't carry Gooch's jock strap...but I still think that he looked like crap, LOL.

(P.S. if he did the "hands in the pocket" in the minor leagues, he'd be dinged on his evaluation.)

I was more into the HD wiggles all over the place like he was a caged tiger that couldn't keep still, or maybe that was due to the cold, or even his normal style as I do not get to watch much TV.

In arguments, HIP might come across or look less aggressive, rather than giving off a more non-chalant type appearance. Good observation on your part and explanation of how things could be or are perceived, perhaps without one even knowing the perception being sent.

@lawump hits the nail on the head right here (see the red and green above) .   ANYONE else, in ANY situation, and there would be griping about it.  But , since it's on a pro field, it's ok.  You guys are really funny that way, it's comical.  GOD FORBID anyone says ANYTHING about a professional on the field!!! "You're not a pro, so you can't comment" ...blah blah blah 

The comment bolded in blue is VERY true ... at any level this would be an evaluation ding, and all of us know that, but for some reason most can't admit it.

We talk all the time about how to represent yourself, look the part, shirts not wrinkled, pants pressed, carry yourself with confidence, voice, etc .... and we have a MLB umpire doing his fist World Series plate and his hands are in his pockets, ....  but that's ok, because he's doing the World Series?  Wow .... I'm starting to think that being an umpire is like being a politician, LOL .....

You can HAVE that! I'm unhappy when it is 40 and drizzling in the spring here. I don't even want to think about below freezing and it looks like there is snow still on the warning tracks.

@Thunderheads....  I know I am a little late to the tea party (pun intended), but when I turned on the game, hands in pockets was the first thing I saw. Because I umpire. Only because I umpire.

I agree. It looked bad. To me. To you. To many umpires. To everyone else, it looked like he was cold. As many have mentioned here many times, these guys are there for a reason, and many of the things they do are not exemplars for us neophytes, but you know that.

Some people like to be argumentative simply to be argumentative. Consider the source(s).

Thanks for the common sense post, I appreciate it.  If this situation was NOT a Wolrd Series game ....you would have seen a lot more people leaning towards 'hands in pockets' looking bad.  However, since it happened on a pro field in the World Series, ...its ok ...
