We were at that game - the only thing we could think was the step. It was never replayed in the stadium. We were surprised that Miley stayed in the game - he went off on Angel. Angel did seem to have a bad day, his zone was moving around, and I don't think he pulled the string on anyone, causing both catchers to hold the ball a few times.

Hernandez made the call - tough from his angle - U1 and the rest just echoed the call.

The next pitch after this looked like a belt high strike and it was called a ball - guessing the moral of the story is don't yell at Angel if you think he missed a call.

Was it a balk? Must of been they called it.

He very clearly stepped toward home, which committed him to pitch to the batter.

Hernandez gave his usual signal for a step balk, tapping his leg and pointing toward the plate.

He did not have a good day behind the plate (balls and strikes wise) IMO

I completely agree - I have no idea how he could call that.  If the 1st base umpire made the call - that's a different story

He's saying PU cannot see "foot behind the rubber" for a balk.  Which is what zoops was responding to.

That being said, forgetting who called it, from the side angle you wouldn't call the plane balk from the 1st base view?

Pretty obvious balk. I'm sure at least U2 and probably U1 had that as well Angel was just the first to act on it. Side note just based on the comments above abut what the balk was, who should have called it, and where you can and can't call this balk. 1) If you see a balk call a balk, and if someone on your crew calls a balk mirror that balk. Even if you didn't see the balk still mirror it. The umpire who makes the initial balk call will step up and handle any situation that comes with it. 2) The balk was called because F1 moved in the direction of home during his step not because he crossed the rubber or broke "the 45" (the 45 doesn't exist. it's a myth of baseball). 3) You can call this balk from anywhere on the field, it doesn't matter if you're U1, U2, U3, or PU. As I mentioned before when done properly our crew will mirror you and help sell the call. Too many times I see an umpire miss a balk and then explain that they didn't feel they could call the balk from where they were on the field.

I called this balk twice this year.  One time in a HS game and once in a Sr-LL game.

the coaches reaction was the same in both cases, "But he has 45?"  I explained the error of their thinking and we moved on.
