This is funny stuff ..........

As far as I can tell, Hoye has time and hasn't put the ball in play yet, ....  Hirscheck calls a balk, and Hoye calls it off!  Then the fun insues....

Funnier for me, because I've met both guys and I know James Hoye will talk about this next February at the SEMUC! :)

Thats funny!  Explain the "gun in holster" mechanic?

To change topics, on the 2nd clip in this vid, Orioles/Yankees, HBP on check swing strike 3 (ruled a swing by PU), PU conferenced with partners voluntarily although it was pretty clear, and why the long conference?

If there wasn't time it was a start stop balk. This is the second one I've seen where the pitcher steps off as he's coming set, which is allowed, but the slightest pause as you step off will get balked in MLB.

If he doesn't Jeff, let's be sure to bring it up!

Unfortunately with time in, I have seen this balk not called in local ball. Do not know why anyone thinks it would not be a balk had there been time in. Please enlighten me as to why this is not a balk locally in all rule sets, or are the umpires just not very good at the different types of balks. Had there not been time out, is this ok and not a balk in some particular baseball rule set where a lead is acceptable on the bases?

What  are you saying was a balk.

The part at 12-15 that you can hear Hirschbeck calling a balk for the start and stop and then the step off.

You can step off or pick off as you come set. MLB seems very picky on this. The pitcher almost has to have some stop of his come set motion to put his pivot foot behind the rubber. That's why it's not recognized at lower levels. You have to look hard for the pause between the coming set and the step off. It might be that in MLB that move is designed to see what the runner/s will do and the umpires are watching for it.

Or, are you saying that you can't step off as you come set?

Replying to my own post.

Whoa, there's a lot going on here that maybe those of you that know Hoye will get the scoop. First of all, pitcher on the rubber, starting to come set, batter and catcher in position, and you haven't put the ball in play? What's with "time OUT"? I haven't heard that on a baseball field. I have said time was out to numerous coaches though.

Second, thanks to my MLB.com subscription, when I see the next pitch Hoye doesn't, as usual in MLB, doesn't put the ball in play.

Third, U3 straddles the line.

Fourth, though U3 puts his guns back, U whatever Davidson gives the PU a hand clap. I think there was some kind of philosophical dispute being massaged there.

You have to see the whole at bat to understand.

Then you have to address it locally because this was pretty clearly a balk and I'd like to think Id get it at all the levels I do.
