Not me.  Honestly, in real time from behind the plate, I doubt I would have thought he stuck his elbow in there.  I see it on replay, but you know what they say about hindsight.

I felt the same. Watching it once, real time, I don't believe I'd keep him at bat. Watching the replays, I'd have no qualm if PU did.

I would kept him there.  Now the people are going to talk trash criticizing the plate guy, the same way they criticize Joyce.

nah they're going to trash the batter

In real time I did not see enough to keep him in the box.  The slow motion replays make it seem like he dove into the pitch. Brandon McCarthy's take.

Watch the video in this link. Bob Davidson may not agree with McCarthy

Something tells me McCarthy isn't a big fan of Max's... interesting his comment about a bunt. When asked if he'd be PO'ed if a guy tried to lay down a bunt to break up his perfect game bid, he said "no'...I say "liar."

Anyone keeping Tabata at the plate??

Sure, why not? We're trained to umpire the pitch, not the situation. Manage the situation, umpire the pitch.

That said, I doubt Tich could see this too well. He's basically looking through the batter's body here. And although the batter dips his elbow, he doesn't move it laterally over the plate.

If you don't want the HBP, don't throw it so far inside. Scherzer has had almost impossibly good command for the past 2 games (he's given up 1 hit to the last 55 batters faced), and this one got away from him.

That's not the umpire's fault.

How is saying that you (an internet umpire) would have done different/better, not trash talking ?

No participant complained. No manager went ballistic. No one asked for a review. Scherzer said in the post game interview that it just got away from him.

But what do they know . . . ?

The thing about this play is that the batter's movement caused him to get hit by the pitch.  Minus the elbow guard, there is no way he does what he did w/ his elbow.

I am not judging a bang-bang decision by the Major League Baseball umpire.

There is a case to keep the batter there.  Without the elbow pad, hitters will raise their arms allowing the baseball to pass under their arms.

Too bad a perfecto had to end on a douche move by the hitter.  It's part of why the perfect games are so rare...there are so many random things that can happened during a 9 inning baseball game.

I don't think the ball hit him, I think he hit the ball. He had armor and he was going to use it. Hard to see it given the angles, but I support keeping him at the plate.

And the meathead in me would be perfectly fine if there's a ball in his ribs the next game.

No way anyone can say what they had done unless you are behind the Dish watching it.
I am good with the call either way.

I'm perfectly fine with it ......no way you see what you see in slo-mo at full speed ....plus .... Scherzer is a douche-bag, so ....

Oh, he was a great guy last season...where'd he play again?

:P

He was a whiner in Detroit.  The baseball world outside of Detroit didn't hear it but we sure did.  AND, we all knew he wasn't coming back before Spring Training started in February 2014.

Jeff's right.  He's a douche...

I had a kid pull this over the weekend.  He tried to do it on ball 2 and missed it.  The smart one he is, he managed to get hit by dropping the elbow on Ball 4 so I let him take the dead ball ball 4.

The umpire gets one look at it. I'll bet that the thought of keeping him in the box was there, but then you have a integrity factor in the back of your mind. Do I really have B trying to get hit or am I being influenced to keep the perfecto intact. If PU kept B in the box and on replay, the evidence was as compelling that he didn't try to get hit, then his reputation would have taken a bigger hit than what he did do (rule HBP). I believe PU took his best shot and that's all he could do.

Without integrity, this job would be impossible.
