Replay shows no evidence to change the call.  This is a good example of what will sometimes happen when the replay system is put into effect.

Then, there might be complaints about how the system needs to get these calls right.  Of course that can be fixed.  Install accelerometers in all baseballs, all gloves, all uniforms, and all bases.  Then a team of individuals in white lab coats can review the video and instant graphs of tugs, bumps, jumps, wiggles, and knocks, as a function of time, for all materials involved in the play, displayed on many computer monitors.  After huddling together for 10 minutes, this team can call the play based.  The data can be displayed on the jumbo screen at the park, so all the fans can see the evidence.   :sarcasm:

If implemented correctly next year Should speed up the game IF the umpires have the balls to toss the whiney managers that want to come out and yammer about every JUDGEMENT call.

" OK skip, do you want to challlenge this call?

No.

Go back in the dugout.

BUT I just want to ask you if you are correct.

Go back in the dugout OR go to the showers!"

Remember FOX had some infrared camera or something during the playoffs a few years ago that purported to show a batted ball just nicked a batters shoe and the umpires didn't see it.

Why would he go for help on this?  Own the damn call.

Why? Because in an instant U1 had worst angle of the four of them. Why ask for help? Because another umpire might have been 100% sure that he missed seeing a tag. The days of one play/one call are gone.

This is the kind of play that I don't have a problem asking for help on. "Here's the deal coach, I've got no tag. I'll ask my partner(s) what they saw, but unless they convince me otherwise, we're sticking with safe/no tag."

The worst angle of the four?  I know we preach angle over distance, but somehow I don't think U3 had a better view of that play.  That's just nonsense.

And further - "here's the deal, skip, I didn't see (fill in the blank), I'll ask my partners" is a seemingly becoming the norm.  I'm getting sick of it.  There are 4 umpires on that field.  If you can't handle your own base, how the heck are you supposed to cover another one?

I never said U3 had a better view, just a better angle. Because of the way the play finished, and his angle, U1 was the only umpire that couldn't have possibly seen a tag.

Asking your partner is not the norm...that is the nonsense. When an umpire sees his play and makes his judgement call, he sticks with it right or wrong, that is the norm. But when an umpire gets straight-lined/blocked, it doesn't hurt anything, except perhaps the old guard's sensibilities, to ask, if asked. It is rare, nowhere near a norm.

Like any business, workers have to adapt or else others will replace them. Baseball is no different. If an umpire is so inflexible as to refuse to ever consider getting help when straight-lined, their advancement will be limited.

1 - better view/better angle?  Seriously?   You say tomato, I say tomahto

2 - If a single A umpire continually goes to his partner for help, I guaranty his "advancement will be limited"

I would have liked to have seen him take a more aggressive read step after seeing the throw was going to be up the line. But looks like he got the call correct.

ding ding ding.. we have a winner....
