There was a topic about passing on here the other day. It may have happend in the rays game today. Can't tell from the angle of the camera. What's everyone think?

You don't see this everyday in the MLB. The call is close possibly missed???

 

But I do like this video because as amateur umpires this is where you will see passing. A high deep fly ball where R1 has to stay close to the base and the BR makes the turn.

Not one of these angles helps. We need the camera that is at the corner of the 3rd base dugout looking right into right field to see the comparison of runners side by side.

What is the exact rule for passing? If just a toe or hand is in front of the preceding runner, is that passing?, or does the whole body or both feet have to pass in front?

Who called it? No way U1 or U2 saw it. That much we can tell from the video angles.

It wasn't U3. Only U1 and U2 got together. According to the manager who came out on the call they refused to consult PU.

I was watching this game. I watched every replay and the post game where the first segment was all about this call. I'm still not sure what was seen.

If that's really the best camera angle they have, that's either some CRAPPY work in the truck on getting camera angles or somebody (a camera man) screwed up. Especially in a domed park.

 

Announcers theory appeared to be that we have no evidence to the contrary, so the umpire must be wrong.

I thought I saw a clip of a game where the home plate umpire ruled interference on the runner going to first for being out of the running lane (to the left of) and was a close judgment call. It might have been the Phillies on Wednesday. Can anyone conjur up that one, so the young guys can at least see one early in the season.

You need to be entirely past to pass

U1 is who called it, he pivoted and glanced over his shoulder coming in, then picked up the runners after he turned. Watch early when they were showing the runner scoring. As he turns at third you can see him looking, you can't see the runners because the passing has already happened.

I wish this were a Major League game so there would be a camera with the angle or an eagle eye to spot when U1 called it.

Funny thing is, the thunderdome has ceiling cams. I don't know why the director didn't access that feed, it would have been a great angle to judge passing.

Probably because the ceiling camera clearly shows Longo passing Zobrist, and then Dwayne Statz and company wouldn't have had anything to piss and moan about. They are 2 of the biggest whiners around IMO..

If this was just televised  by the locals then it in all likelihood did not have a gazillion cameras in action. We get spoiled by the major network games and don't realize that small market teams have broadcasters with small market budgets.

In general that's true. In that park, I believe the cams in the catwalks are permanently installed.

I was puzzled at how bad of a camera angle was showed. The only explanation I could think of was that the camera that saw everything showed that the umpires nailed the call.

It was obviously a close call either way. Neither Dewayne Staats, or Brian Anderson ever accused the crew of getting the call wrong. Staats pointed out that passing needs to be a sure thing to be called.

Todd Kalas noted that the umpire who made the call did so demonstratively (which we could not see during the broadcast).

Tampa Bay has a damn fine broadcast crew. Nothing like most of the jokers on other Fox affiliates, IMO.

I like Staats. He is better than average, but IMO he gets pissy when calls don't go his way..and tends to dwell on them for far too long.

I wholeheartedly disagree, good sir. But, when things are not going his way, they are also not going mine.

Biased as I may be, I have no tolerance for broadcasters (or anybody) abusing umpires.

I'm sure you listen to him much more than I. Maybe I'm slanted because I hear him more watching controversial highlights than any other time. I must admit I liked him a lot for the short while he did Yankee games back in the early 90's.

Mounted and accessible are two different things. The network may have them there but that doesn't mean the local coverage gets to use them.
