In the dark ages of the internet, long before you were born, we didn't have iconic emoticons. So we made do with ASCII art, which I think is pretty easy to remember. For example, a smiley face, intended to indication facetiousness or sarcasm, could be indicated with a colon and a closing parenthesis. (": )", but without the space.) And it looks like the posting software here might turn it back into a simple smiley face for you .
