The Wilson titanium with mesh pads is my go-to, the honigs aluminum or titanium(?) It's the lightest mask I have and bought from an umpire that was retiring is my backup

I put the all Star visor on the Wilson mask and because of how it's made it's placement makes it perfect for blocking the Sun that could be in your eyes. And if you were oakleys or other polarized glasses, when the sun is in the middle of the sky right in your face you don't go blind and you can see every pitch

 

The champro sun visor that I have on my backup honigs mask doesn't do as good a job and basically I can cover that area with the bill of my hat

you need the 'proper' sun shield for that Wilson (that all-star is only made for their FM4000 frames) ...that's why it doesn't fit

Be honest I actually like the way it's placed where it sort of comes down beyond the bar. I'm in the process of getting or making if you will something to hold it in place better. But it works best I know with the All-Star mask, however I do like the placement of it on the Wilson mask as it helps block the sun better

Neither. It's hollow steel. You can tell from the photo. The bar ends are crimped and sealed, and the bends made at the earguards are dimple-crimped. Those dimples don't form in anything solid; they form in hollow tubes. If this was titanium or aluminum, the bar ends would be blunt-cut. I'm not doubting it's light... it just isn't aluminum or titanium.

That looks great! I wish I knew about this gunmetal color before I got both of FM4000s powdercoated matte black. They look great too, but I have to say I think I like the gunmetal better, at least in the pics.

Well here is my recently chipped AS FM4kmag

this week I got hit on the top of the head by a pitch that skipped off the ole noggin. It did not hurt, but it caused a small egg and "stunned me" not like physically but mentally had me going "how the heck did that get past my mask and still hit me.

So I got a AS skull cap and while there got an AS throat guard as well as an AS delta flex harness to make it all one big happy family.

Sorry only one crappy photo of the set up so far.

Odd thing I thought the skull caps were blue mine is black.

The Cobalt Skully only comes in black.  They have others (catchers versions) that come in other colors, but the "Cobalt" for umpires is only black

You might have thought that because some (at least mine) of the AS skull caps appear to have a dark navy (almost black) underside, but the top is a black/gray.  I think you'll LOVE the skully! I took a hit to it on what sounds like was a similar hit last year, and it didn't hurt at all, but I'm sure it would have with just a basic hat.

I love this mask! I dubbed it “The Hermann Munster”. It’s probably more protective than those wretched Champro Starter Kit masks. 

Oh, and Arch, no reason to apologize. Any chance to rub salt… lemon 🍋 juice… battery acid… in the wound of the black vs. navy fight, do it!  
 

Remember, the only reason we have this fight is because associations want to control us, and not grant us the latitude to make our own decisions. Some umpire associations are like HOAs… and I hate HOAs.

any contact with regular paint will 'smudge' it ... get it powder coated, send it to Tony @ Mask-It sports

It's ok. This specific paint doesn't work that well, but a previous mask I spray painted a flat black is perfect. It would need a few more coats or a powdercoating to be perfect in my opinion.

Got my F3v2 upgraded and ready to go for my first time back on the diamond since 2019. Added the throat guard and refitted the sun visor.

Also picked up the All Star Cobalt helmet to go with it, though I'm still not sure about that as it doesn't really fit the way I wanted it to. May still try it anyway.

If it's just the sizing that's the problem, you can buy replacement pads of a different size. I use a mix of M and L pads and fits perfect.
