I've been a steady Wilson wrap-around guy for years as my go-to "cold weather" leather pads.

@wolfe_man's mask post 2 weeks ago inspired me to try deerskin LUCs in my Diamond. They fit well and I'm even happier with the feel!

LUCs are a step up from Wilson, IMO. Until I held both pads side-by-side when I took out the wrap-arounds to replace with the LUCs, I never realized how thin those wrap-around pads are!  

From an aesthetics POV, the split-front Velcro bothered me a little when I first installed the bottom pad. But I conquered my OCD and figured it's a small price to pay the improved feel and protection. I appreciate All-Star keeping their logo off the bottom pad and only adding a discrete logo on the top pad Velcro (**cough** Wilson **cough**).

The only drawback from a retail standpoint is that you have to purchase the All-Star black MAG mask to get All-Star's vintage dark tan deerskin LUCs that look like brown antique leather. The replacement deerskin pads are a lighter, more "yellow" tan - though still darker than Honig's calf skin pads. I would have preferred buying the vintage dark tan LUCs but I couldn't find them anywhere sold separately.

@Scotty_Ump Where did you get those pads? It's odd that they're a different shade of leather and also the ones that came with my mag don't have the all star logo on the top strap.

@Scissors - I thought the same thing when I ordered the replacement pads through UA. After I got the pads in the mail and saw the color, I went back to UA website and read these subtle description differences in the pads.

I think there are 2 different deerskin pad colors. @JimKirk, do my eyes deceive me?

All Star has the mag pads in all colors. You can buy them direct.
 

FWIW they only make one color of deerskin pads. The color variation is dependent on  lighting and the camera.

The AS Mag deerskin pads are also varying colors...because leather is an organic material. They use the same processes and chemicals and dyes to prepare the deerskin but, no skins from two different animals are going to end up the same exact same color.

All-Star started their “deerskin” with a particular color - one with an orange or pumpkin tint.

That color of deerskin could no longer be sourced, and there is a new color.

So, you are correct, there are 2 versions, but only due to the changeover. There will be 1 moving forward.

I will add these are tough to describe in copy as doeskin and deerskin to some is a material, whereas to others it’s a color.

But this hopefully should clear up the misunderstanding.

Hey I don't know why Virginia's getting tied in here too, we can wear black now. Most guys don't because the shirts are expensive though

If you have the ability to tune in on the MLB app. San Francisco Giants catcher Kurt Casali has a shiny gold Nike Titanium. AND IT IS STRAIGHT !!!

(Add on note: happened to notice F2 for Arizona had the same mask.)

I think a lot of MLB catchers were given one for this weekend. I’ve seen several highlights of games with F2’s in shiny gold Nike masks!

Yeah. The Giants backup catcher had one. As did the Miami catcher yesterday. 

The gold with that muted green padding was pretty slick.
