Thunderheads
Everyone ..... @OODA Loop There was a question on this topic that was an EQUIPMENT question, and not MASK PORN which is photos of your rigs, therefore, I moved it to the generic equipment forum w/ a new topic "Mask Upgrade Question" ..... the link is here:
NicNag
So my go to is the wilson aluminum powder coated mask with the pads from the titanium mask. I didn’t like the memory foam pads that came with it. I put the sun shield and long y inch throat guard. Then my alternative mask is the all star mask I picked up from play it again sports for $20. I had to change the harness to a normal harness. It had the one for the hard helmet. The pads are from +pos. They’re both nice and light and I have all confidence wearing them.
Aging_Arbiter
@NicNag I like the look of the 2nd rig better. I'm not sure if it is because of the placement of the throat guard or what (on the 1st), but it doesn't seem that it would function as intended. NicNag
I like the long throat guard. It has good coverage. Something different for the season. If it’s put under the cage I can’t bend my neck down at all. This way it flexes when it touches my chest protector so I can look down. And I like that it covers some of the W. But does it pull your hat off like his does when you remove it? If not then it’s not a legitimate Bob D special! 1

acpar72
I do. And FYI O'Nora, Winters, and Wagner have all switched from F3 to All Star Magnesium.

That’s the entire point. If you’re a MLB Umpire, and likely coming out of the game if you take a headshot, even as a precautionary measure, then it just behooves you to get the lightest, unbreakable mask in the game right now. If All-Star was smart (and I believe they are), they infuse the concushion into the upper pad. Game, set, match Wilson. Does that mean Force3’s Defender is inferior? Not at all. I fervently believe that it is the king of amateur baseball. Perhaps Force3 is analyzing how to reduce the weight further (titanium? Cast magnesium components?), but their design concept is sound. Gosh, I love design and engineering competition – it really propels innovation and escalates production. Can you see why I despise monopolies exclusive contracts?

Disagree, isn’t the point still to protect your head from long term damage as best you can, not throw that out the window due to the fact that you’ll come out anyway? I don’t see how or why that changes the game.

F3's website says the mask is 27 oz. F3's own throat guard is 3 oz., and I'm sure this is lighter than that.
grk17
@kylehutson I’d love to see that in person. I’m sure the picture doesn’t do the gunmetal grey justice. Especially With the sun shining on it.

Rock Bottom
For those in the western Chicago suburbs, I'm thrilled with the job Midwest Powder Coating in Naperville did on my All-Star FM4000 umpire masks . The final color is Millennium Black - a nice matte finish to keep glare down on sunny days. The mask had lost all of it's original silver color and was having some minor rusting - it's literally better than new now! Special thanks to Delaine for answering all of my many questions! If you use them please tell them Mike Wolff sent you! The cost was $100 for two masks (I have two FM4000s, and given how they lose color I just got them both done at once, because Midwest PC has a $85 minimum set-up fee. With that bringing the cost down to $50 per mask, it was cheaper than MaskIt and I supported a local business. (I have a throat guard on the mask, but for some reason that picture was over my upload size limit.)
