So our local LL district has been blessed to have a recently retired MLB umpire coming out to work games with us not only during the All Star season, but during the regular season as well. Not saying names, but this gent has some MLB WS experience as well as MLB post season play and a few thousand games under his belt. Just for kicks and giggles, we have been trying to get our local coaches, when this gent come out with us, to go to him and ask him to get help on a call. Rightfully so, all of them have said NO WAY, not going to do it... chickens!

Fast forward to last night... 10-11 All Star game... MLB is working 2nd base, calls a runner safe. Since this is the state tournament, none of these teams are local, and most likely have no clue who the guy working 2nd wearing an MLB umpire uniform (versus our LL stuff) actually is. Coach from the defensive team asks for time, and in living video color, goes out to the umpire, asking him to get help on a safe call. Pretty funny watching the coach try and convince this man to get help on his judgement call. Funnier still watching the coach not know how to deal with being told no, it is my call and I have him safe.

Not the funniest thing to happen on a field, but I still got a chuckle out of it.

Please tell me you have video!

Yes we do... looks like it was taken from a potato, but there is a video. Not mine to share; I'll see if I can get a decent copy and permission to post it.

Wearing a MLB umpire uniform during a Little League game?  Ah...no.  I'll give this umpire a lot of credit for wanting to help out, but to wear a MLB uniform at a Little League game is "big timing" to the maximum.  If you are working a Little League game, wear a Little League umpire uniform.

And you would not be correct based on his association with LL and his position within the organization.

Definitely not big gaming anyone, but from the outside looking in, I can see where you might think that. Just will have to believe me when I tell you that in no way does he bat an ego around to anyone.

Based on @Mudisfun’s previous stories, I’m inclined to believe him.  Sounds more to me like Little League asked him to wear it for the “prestige” (re: publicity).  Overall though, I think it’s a bad look.

I’m not surprised the coach didn’t recognize him, but I’m amazed that the word wasn’t already out.  That’s kind of a big deal.

The umpire in question can do whatever he wants, as far as I’m concerned. As I’m local to this district, I know who @Mudisfunis referring to and this big league umpire could wear shorts and high neon green socks on a LL field and I bet nobody would bat an eye

It seems to me that umps are the only ones who care how umps dress, or even if we match at all.   I'm sure just about no-one noticed that he was wearing MLB gear.

True.

The MLB guys that normally help during the LLWS one game always wear their MLB gear also.  I figure they've earned it.  Kind of like a retired veteran wearing the highest rank that they earned while serving.  I wouldn't expect them to wear an E1, CWO1 or O1 insignia, when they attained 6-7 ranks higher before they retired.  He's entitled to wear MLB gear because he earned it.

Now we're getting somewhere!

May be funny to watch but as replay has shown umpires are not always right.

True, but has nothing to do with the OP or this thread.  I don't recall anyone saying that umpires were always correct or should never go for help.

The protocol for going for help in a LL (or almost any amateur game below college -- and even there at many LL games) and going for a replay review in MLB is entirely different.  I am certain that this anonymous MLB umpire would have gone to replay if asked in one of his former games on a similar play.

Rich, I ... uhm, I ......

<sigh.  Heavy, *heavy* sigh>

I'd say you must be a lot of fun at a party, but I'm fairly certain you'd disapprove of them.
