I was doing a game on Friday. Batter took a 1-2 fastball right at the top of the strikezone. I called strike three. He said "wow... F*#Ken wow..." And then covered the plate with dirt and walked away. I tossed him for that. My partner was asking why, I said that I'm not going to clean off the plate after he covers it with dirt without tossing him. He didn't understand why I tossed him. I have been umpiring for 6 years now but he has been umpiring for almost 30. I just figured that it was a different school of thought.

I would have tossed him before the second wow came out of his mouth. The throwing of the dirt would have been fodder for the report.

 I remember i was doign a babe ruth baseball game and the first base umpire threw a kid out, I ask him in between innings why he did it. I guess he was throwing something or was swearing. So i wanted to know just in case i needed to have his back.

This would make sense if your partner was BLIND and didn't see the batter covering the plate with dirt.

Well played! I get tired of having to deal with idiots that have been allowed by other umpires to get away with all kinds of nonsense.

Cowards BUT they will get more games than us!

 

We have an umpire group here in Metro Atlanta that tells their umpires that the amount of games the umpires gets is based on how much “trouble" occurs during his game.

 

When a newcomer to this group asked what that meant he was told “ejections lead to complaints, complaints lead to fewer games for the umpire and that leads to loss of the contractâ€

 

This group is getting more and more contracts.

They staff with young umpires that burn out after 3-4 years.

This group is also the lowest cost per game of all other groups BECAUSE of the type of umpires they recruit and burn out.

All based on volume.

 

As more and more leagues are run by soccer moms and non-baseball people this will get worse.

Agreed and this is one of the parts I dont understand about that mentality...........I am just wrapping up my summer season and I have the lowest ejection rate in my association..........why?, its not because I wont eject .,.......its because I do eject.........

 

If you cross the line and have to go, you go..........the coaches know it and they tell their players.....my line is firm, fair and justice is swift.....I will not pass along to my association mates my problems.....

 

Good supportable, timely ejections lead to less ejections..........

I don't eject enough and this situation had 2 auto-ejects even for me.  "F*#Ken wow?" = gone.  Kicking dirt on the plate = showing me up = gone.

Once the malcontents are gone most people WILL be happy. Thats why we do it.

Good EJ. I have story. I was working one man at a jr. babe ruth game in May.  I had a 3rd base coach give me a bunch of s*&^ after I  called his player out on a bang bang play at 3rd. I shut him down quickly with a "that's enough Tim." Between innings, he came to me and asked what he had done wrong.  I explained to him that only the mgr. can question a call, and that I'm not going tolerate him shouting at me from the coach's box. He was a soccer Daddy and clearly hadn't learned proper baseball etiquette. He then says to me, "I don't know why you're being so tough, last week at my son's JV game, the coach threw dirt at the umpire and he didn't even get tossed. Arguments are part of the game." I looked at Tim and said, "Those are the kind of umpires that make our job harder."
