To call or not to call....this is the question

Umpire-Empire locks topics which have not been active in the last year. The thread you are viewing hasn't been active in 4077 days so you will not be able to post. We do recommend you starting a new topic to find out what's new in the world of umpiring.

Question

Posted

Offense is batting in the bottom of the 7th inning & down by 1 run.

Runner on 1st & 2 outs. Batter pops it up between 3rd & home. R1 gets to 3b & b/r makes it to 2b easily as the ball drops & sticks in the dirt in FAIR territory but the PU yells out wrongfully "FOUL" & immediately knows he ruled it improperly.

He talks it over with you, the BU. Do you:

- Tell him to eat the call even if he & everyone else knows he was wrong & send the runner back to 1b & bring the batter back to the plate.

- Keep the runners where they are on 2b & 3b with 2 outs.

- Send the runners back to 1b & 2b.

Love to hear answers & justifications.

Why is this being posted in Ask the Umpire? Isn't the purpose of this section to provide guests and non-umpires a venue to get their legitimate questions.

I am not asking for the rule, I am asking how YOU would handle it.

I would enforce the appropriate rule.

What is the "appropriate" rule? FED? OBR? College? Pro? NAIA? LL?

Depends on the game. Most of mine are FED, so I'd apply FED.

I work LL.

Keep the runners where they are on 2b & 3b with 2 outs.

Try like heck not to eject coaches/managers who lose their minds.

How is this NOT a legit question? All I did was give the situation & asked how you would handle it. I did not ask for the ruling, just how each one would handle it.

It has often been said, use the rules to solve a problem, not create one. All rule code specify what to do if this happens. The umpire has already screwed up the play, why compound the error by not following the prescribed rule.

For FED there are numerous cases for this situation. It is also right in the rules.

2-16-1 (e)

ART. 1 . . . A foul is a batted ball:

e. that touches the ground after inadvertently being declared foul by an umpire.

Somebody posted a similar situation here a few days ago, and I thought the way he handled it was pretty decent.

Go to the OHC and explain that it should not have been called foul, but nonetheless it's still a foul ball by rule, whether that's just or not. Prepare to lose weight from the butt-chewing that will ensue (and deservedly so - but it's too late by that point), but that's still the way it is.

In OBR, if they made the base before the Foul call, leave them there and play on.

Interesting troll...

It was asked, answered, justified, and documented. Anything else you want?

Oh, and in case you are wondering, what we "would do" better be based solely on the rules - that's our job!

I've always been taught and/or talked with others and have come to the conclusion that if you call it foul, its foul no matter what. you cant change foul to fair. but, if you call it fair and are a 100% sure that you blew it, then kill it immediately and eat it.

Coaches will argue it either way, I just let them have there say to a point, then end it there. It happens, were not perfect but, we should always try to make the right calls. Sometimes we make mistakes just like coaches send runners when they shouldn't, etc.
