I wore the UE CP with UE harness for the first two games I wore it. Worked fine. Then I got the catcher's DFlex and it was better. Then I got the umpire DFlex. Even better still. That harness will improve any CP's fit for sure.

Ok so maybe the UE CP looks cool, feels cool.. but when you get hit, it's going to hurt... I have a hard shell plastic Cp.. i got hit last weekend.. maybe 92mph.. nothing i feel it cause well it hit me, but it did not hurt...

Think about your life and protection versus looking cool.. would you wear shin guards that were not hard plastic?  I bet not, so why different for the equipment that is over your heart ( hello) and ribs?

What do the police officers say who wear Kevlar to protect their heart from bullets?

ok.. askl Jim Evans about his bruise that he got from Wearing that vest in the video... i dont get a bruise from wearing mine..

But you guys are funny.. ( i have 4 Cp, 4 mask and 3 SG).. no idea why you need all that,,, but cant afford to go to clinics..LOL

I have all that and more AND also attend 3-4 formal clinics a year.

@Haid D' Salaami ....  while I understand your comment ..... @JaxRolo makes a point, and that is; not everyone falls under the category of your comment

I have triple the amount of what Haid has in equipment and go to clinics in what category I fall into?  :smachhead:

Mike likes to over generalize his observations and categorize people. It's a fairly common characteristic of many humans.

I'm not sure why so many people do it. I have my theories but they are untested and somewhat controversial as people can also be very sensitive when asked personal questions as to why they think what they do or say what they do.

I admit, I've been guilty of doing it in the past. When I became aware I was doing it I've slowed down tremendously. It has to do with formal thought processes. Focusing on deliberate thought processes and removing emotions from analysis and decision making.

I'm also trying to determine why so many people use LOL on almost everything they write like Mike also does. I have three or four acquaintances from various walks of life that use LOL at the end of almost every text, email or forum posting. Some multiple times in the same post. It's like the guy who says something insulting then says no offense at the end of it.

These are Things that make Dave go hmmmmm. I'm weird. I know it. I am who I am.

LOL can indeed come across as passive-aggressive

I think LOL is the equivalent of saying 'just kidding, man' after calling someone a moron, to keep him from smacking you.

I use both the Gold and the UE. I work a lot of plates and like to have clean and dry gear available. I love them both but the UE just feels better, extends lower and makes me feel safer.

It's been documented that I don't buy the UE hype yet, but I have an honest question: Where has it been documented that it actually protects better than a hard shell? I know it's a little more low profile and costs more than every hard shell, but how does it protect better? If you have a Douglas/Gold/Platinum and bought a UE, what is it doing for you that those didn't do before?

Why is it hype?  I was one of the original users and like it better than the West Vest because it is no where near as bulky.  With the delta flex it doesn't move.  That's not hype. That's fact.

I asked how it protects better. Less bulky is great but it doesn't have anything to do with the level of protection.

The Delta Flex keeps any CP from moving. I wasn't asking about the Delta Flex.

I don't use the Delta on mine and it holds better than any CP I've ever worn.

....and if you did use the Delta Flex ....it would hold EVEN BETTER!

Plus, your hygiene would improve.  That's just science.

I will be using the Force3 equipment trifecta this weekend on a camp.  Also I will use the bag, socks and ball bags.

I always wear the UE trifecta.  A catcher said he hit his hand on my mask Saturday, but I swear I did not feel or hear anything.  Good thing it was a terrible pitch.  If I had known he hit my mask I would have invoked interference and sent the runner back.

Where can I find the UMPIRE'S Delta Flex.....I need to order one for my UE so that I don't get temped to use the one I have for my WVG TW retrofit

Ump Attire should have some, or just order it direct from All Star.

Well, just had to try them. The UE SGs came this a.m. and I must say, I'm impressed with the comfort feel of them! Fit like a glove and very light weight compared to my WV SGs.

The one thing I can't seem to look past in the U.E. products is how they still have plastic in the critical areas. Since in my day job I am an Engineer by trade here are the conclusions I have arrived at:

The real argument comes down to which CP design type protects better against "Blunt force trauma" i.e. baseball crashing into the body.

For Kevlar is all about energy disbursement. For ABS Plastics... the most important mechanical properties are impact resistance and toughness.

The Kevlar works in the same basic way as the net in a soccer goal. Like a soccer goal, it has to "give" a certain amount to absorb the energy of a projectile. The key here is that it still "gives" meaning the body will absorb some of the force of the projectile. This explains why the UE chest protector and the shin guards still have plastic plates in key areas. Even though the UE does a good job of reducing the energy of a baseball, it still allows some "force" to get through. It will be this "force" that will cause damage to your shoulder blade, shoulder cap, collar bone, knee cap, or shin bone. All are areas that sit just below skin surface and can be broken with minimal force/pressure, thus require the extra plastic plate protection.

But what about  heart protection???

That same force that is enough to bruise the flesh under the UE can still be enough to disrupt the rhythm of the heart... this is not just a flaw of the UE this can be experienced with a standard CP also. However the plastic plates will do a better job of deflecting the force since the most important mechanical properties of ABS  plastic are impact resistance and toughness

Here are some other things to consider about Kevlar....

  • Kevlar textiles tend to absorb moisture. Very few general cloths are manufactured with Kevlar.
  • Kevlar reacts well under a tensile force (stretching force) but badly under a compression force (pressing force) It is not used where compression resistance is needed.
  • Kevlar reacts badly to UV light (sunlight) unless it is protected / hidden from direct sunlight.
  • In order for Kevlar to be as effective as possible, it needs to be kept away from water and direct sunlight

Your right.. If the shoes fits?..... If it doesnt pertain to you, then disregard.

I guess once again I offended some of you.... well sorry.. But really do you need all that equipment, I mean we all have our fav CP, and only wear that one.. but hey i have 4 more in my closet just incase the Zombie invasion happens.

Some of you say you go to formal training.... what formal training is that Umpire school? that might be the closet thing to formal in the umpire world. Yeah maybe you go to a few clinics, but still... IMHO that CP is not suited well for umpires that work games in kids who attend college.

I do categorize people, everyone does it... like i said if the shoe fits.......

I think every CP has that "why would they do that?" aspect to it.  Take the System 7 and its 3/16 inch protection over the center of the chest.  If I remember correctly, that was designed in order to improve air flow?  Well, that area is exactly where your heart sets inside your body!  So they took the time to protect the left and right sides of my sternum but not the middle where your heart is.  Im not a Dr. (just play one here on umpire empire)  but that can't be safe is it especially when the pads wear down over time?  You could buy replacement pads sure, but I see them "in limited quantities" and "out of stock" anymore in most places and in three years when those pads are worn down enough to replace them I doubt they will be available.
