Well if F1 ever pulls a gun out and starts shooting at you....glad to know you UE wears will be protected from the bullets. So until the "concealed weapon" rule is added to the rulebook...I'll stick with my hard shell.

Because we all know that the bad guys follow all of the laws. Since we're going there.

Gun laws in a chest protector thread. Awesome in so many ways.

A few things said on here have made me think about a old line my father used to say when he was umpiring more regularly. "The lower the level of play...the more protection you need!!"

Again was hit today while wearing my UE chest protector.  HURT LIKE HELL.  Didn't come any where near the UE, but my thigh should be alright after icing it.

It is what you feel good with..I have tried them all over the years and kept going back to my Douglas because it felt good and gave excellent protection and I made a few mods to it to tweak it just the way I wanted it. I am a former ice hockey goalie who was modding my gear before the MFG's offered a modification service. I do the same to my umpire protectives. I used the Bauer ref shin pads with mods and they are the best I have ever worn. I am looking forward to using my EU CP and SG and from there I will either wear as is or make mods many of the companies forget or don't want to do. Safety first but comfort is close behind.

Ok so maybe the UE CP looks cool, feels cool.. but when you get hit, it's going to hurt... I have a hard shell plastic Cp.. i got hit last weekend.. maybe 92mph.. nothing i feel it cause well it hit me, but it did not hurt...

 

Think about your life and protection versus looking cool.. would you wear shin guards that were not hard plastic?  I bet not, so why different for the equipment that is over your heart ( hello) and ribs?

What do the police officers say who wear Kevlar to protect their heart from bullets?

 

ok.. askl Jim Evans about his bruise that he got from Wearing that vest in the video... i dont get a bruise from wearing mine..

 

But you guys are funny.. ( i have 4 Cp, 4 mask and 3 SG).. no idea why you need all that,,, but cant afford to go to clinics..LOL

It's not different. If you want a heavier vest so that when you get hit you don't feel anything, that equipment exists.

I don't think that the UE was ever marketed as the vest that is designed for you to not feel anything.  No ...and that's never been questioned.

Should I not wear my seatbelt because it might break my ribs if I need to use it?  Again, wrong argument, you're talking about "life/death", like the "kevlar stops bullets" theory.

I do agree, that it is a personal preference thing, but to say that the UE is inadequate b/c it's made of the same material that stops bullets is silly. Maybe not your thing or a users preference, but it's certainly adequate. I concur.

The Platinum, Gold, All Star, Douglas, etc...are all great vests and from a baseball standpoint I would wear any of them and feel safe.

I think we'd all agree that he balloon/raft offers the best protection of any "vest" but none of us will be caught dead wearing that thing...and it's not even a hard shell.

I also agree that it really is a Chevy/Ford argument. That's good! :)

 

Ok, ...let me ask this as an additional question:

What did you wear before your "Gold", or "Douglas" or whatever?

 

Plus pos.  Bought a West Vest because it looked really cool with hard plastic.

I don't think anybody has said that it's a better protector. I think the low profile piece and the new, cool factor are likely the big reasons.

For me, I like the fact that I do not have to adjust my UE once it's on, it's locked into place. That's my favorite thing about the UE

I've spoken with guys who were there. All three said he took a shot but didn't act hurt. The guy on here who took the 85 mph shot and posted on YouTube said it didn't hurt. I've taken about 10 hits. No idea of velocity but some college D2, NAIA and JUCO, some men's league with former professional pitchers throwing. Some high school. Some college woodbat with D1 guys throwing. Never felt anything above a push. Zero pain. Except for no noise and no bouncing ball like my WV Gold the same end state. Ball hits with no ill effects of any kind. Advantage for me was the comfort and coverage.

I'm sold on the UE protector and shins. I have been hit and felt no pain. Everyone needs to make their own minds up, and do what you feel is best for you. I have worn an old catchers chest protector, what is now called the Honig's Elite, what is now called the Honigs Pro Elite (K1), and an original West Vest. I like the UE because it is low profile, and paired with the Delta Flex it stays put and I don't have to adjust it every inning to make sure it stays where it's supposed to.

Not saying it protects any better. It does protect just as well, just that the ball doesn't bounce back to the pitcher but drops to the ground.  The reason why I wear it is because I like the lower profile.  It gives every bit of collarbone protection as any other.  I have read some people on here talking about collarbone breaks when people ear the UE, but have yet to hear of anybody who wears one saying they had any injuries.  And you are correct about the delta flex harness.

I understand what you are saying, the ue harness is ok.  The delta harness is better than the ue.  You just have to use the ue clips.
