I'm wonderIng if the wearing of 8 stitch hats with the mask might cause a transmittal to the forehead as the pads compress.

No smilie? Or you're thinking that hat brims are made of something more rigid than cardboard?

Mask didn't spin at all, so he got all 91mph. Ball dropped straight down. Ouch.

I hate to say it, but as someone who has had multiple concussions (none from umpiring, but my second made me not myself for almost 2 weeks), they need to get him out of there after that shot.  He did not look good during the initial assessment.  A better on field test needs to be followed with an independent trained person making the call if they can continue (should be for players too).

No smilie both maybe a wonderlie. Ball dropped down but he exhibits pain to the forehead. Just like the bars hit his brim and the cardboard transmitted a blow to his forehead. There was another one of these that I saw and wondered about this year. Maybe there was a reason they made a 4 stitch in the old days.

Concussion awareness is on the rise for umpires. The last few years you've seen many guys come out of the game after taking a shot. Not too long ago they would "tough it out" and not come out of the game for anything.

MLB, and MiLB I believe too, give each umpire a baseline basic neurological test in the preseason. Then when they take a hit they have to take the test again. They will not be cleared to return until they score within X% of their original baseline.

It's not a perfect system, but concussions are such peculiar injuries. you and I could take the same exact blow to the head using the same protective equipment, that may not even seem that bad and you be fine and I could get a severe concussion.

And most people who have suffered a concussion become more susceptible to further concussions.

A guy that was in my HS association went to Pro school got a job and was advancing well. But he was unfortunate enough to take more than his share of hits to the mask. MiLB ended up releasing him for medical reasons. That was such a shame.

But just go back on this forum and even the ones that are older than Umpire-Empire. it wasn't that long ago when you would read posts about guys saying "boy I got my bell rung last night." The enhanced awareness is making it's way down to the amateur level and guys are realizing it's more serious than just getting your bell rung,

The state of NJ requires all high school athletes to take that baseline exam as well. Going further, all officials must get concussion training awareness every year or they cannot work in any sporting events.

Wow. What a shot. I pray that Mr. Scott is a-ok! That was quite the thud. He didn't look so well, when first checked, and again when the trainer helped him off the field. That ball must of hit him in excess of 100 mph.

Side note: Have y'all checked out the Team Wendy web site? Do it. It's an education in unto itself. They have a whole page dedicated to the scientific engineering behind their mask pads, and the corrilation to concussion prevention. Awesome stuff. Great work Team Wendy!

Mr. Scott is fine. He had 11 days off for the injury and probably, like the players, if you take a pretty good shot you will need that 15 day deal that the players union got installed for catchers. After the 11 days the crew had their vacation week since I could not find them in the box scores and Mr. Scott returned 8-26-13 right back at the scene of the original hit in Seattle on the 7th. He worked in Arizona yesterday.

Thanks for the update. I'm happy to hear that. All umpires are in my thoughts and prayers, always.

Actually officials are the most blessed occupation in the world. We have a great job and coaches are constantly blessing us. :)

Yes, instead of Holy Water, it's spit.

Instead of Anointing Oil, it's sunflower, peanut, or bubble gum juice.

They constantly call upon the name of the Lord every time they say "Jesus Christ!"

They are constantly amazed at our calls when they say "God Almighty!"

When they get a call they bless us with "Good call Ump!"

They are not inhibited to come and share with us their confessions.

They seek guidance from us when they need help with wisdom from the baseball scriptures.

When they need exorcising of their baseball demons, we eject them.

They take our bases to protect them from unyielding thieves.

When it's time to leave, they go graciously.

Yup. Thank you Lord you made me an umpire. I wouldn't have it any other way.
