We want to buy a number of shirts as gifts, with numbers sewn on by retailer. Searching a little shows that Honig's and Lester's Upstate can provide this service. Any experience or recommendations regarding these or others?

Buy the shirts and numbers. Find a local REPUTABLE seamstress and have them put on. SHOULD cost about $4.00 PER NUMBER.

I would recommend either or both of these suppliers.  Good companies.

Why do amateur umpires have numbers?

We are not amateur. We get paid. We are professionals working amateur games.

I know what you mean.  We don't wear numbers. Serve no purpose but to spend more money!

Just like players, they are used to identify the umpire while in uniform. Used by associations the receive feedback/evaluations from coaches, state/region evaluators etc. If the name is not known, it is easy to refer to the uniform number.

Interesting.  I guess since everything is in Arbiter for our association, there's no need for the numbers.  If a coach wants to provide "feedback" (IOW, bitch about the umpire ;) ), he can simply reference the game and the assignor knows who was working it.  Never heard of a state/region official evaluating umpires in our association outside of playoffs.  Things are so different from region to region..

I work in one college association that covers multiple states and the numbers make it much easier for identification. The association itself believes it looks more professional. I'm not crazy about it, I have to buy shirts with and without numbers.

My recommendation is to go to the officialschoice.com and buy whatever coordinating $0.77 numbers they offer right now, buy they shirts separate or use ones you already own, then take them to a local seamstress, embroidery shop, or even a Men's Wearhouse store. (I only know this because I work there and all stores have full time professional tailors)

Using a shirt you already own or buying a Smitty brand shirt from Ump-Attire.com can save money, plus the numbers for only 77 cents! Having them sewn on wont be too expensive wherever you go, and boom, your new shirt is made for possibly under $30/shirt. Buying the Honigs shirts with the numbers pre-embroidered all together is $39.95 + shipping, per shirt. Granted, they are Honigs and the work is already done, but ever penny counts these days.

Yeah, it seems to be kind of hit and miss with them. Used to be great, but now the site is slowing down and hasn't put any new products out. I get my new package today, so we'll hope everything is in there from them!

in my HS association numbers are earned when you become a "level 3" umpire meaning you are eligible to work HS post season games. It is somewhat a big to earn them.

In my college  association there are no numbers.

Warren,

couldn't this lead to a problem if the coaches know what the numbers mean.....ie the guy on the dish has no numbers but the base guy does??

This is just my humble opinion but I don't think anyone should have a number on their shirt unless they are in the show. Minor league umpires don't wear numbers so why should anyone else? I've heard the argument that it helps people such as coaches and evaluators know who is who, but that just seems like an invalid argument to me. If a coach needs to know who I am they can ask for my name and I will gladly give it to them just like I do at the plate meeting. If an evaluator needs to know my name, why is he evaluating in the first place? Any one evaluating your game is going to know who you are anyway. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that numbers should be earned and should only be earned by making it to the majors.

Not entirely true. There are umpires in the AA (Eastern League) and AAA (Pacific Coast League) that wear numbers.

Numbers were supposedly used for identification back in the stone age when games were assigned on a legal pad, we called coaches "coach" and they called us "blue", and we were so unapproachable that coaches didn't want to ask our names for fear of being ejected.  We've come full circle with this.  Now, coaches probably couldn't tell you after a game what the umpire's numbers were, but they could tell you their names.

I have a number in 2-3 conferences, none of them match, and I don't even know what they are...I think 31, 34 and 24.  It's just more jerseys and jackets I have to buy.

anyone have opinions on this color scheme?

The mauve walls go well with the white ceiling and chair.  But I'd get rid of the plaid "throw blanket."  It doesn't work with the walls, chair, or ceiling.

And next time I'd suggest not having that guy stand in front of everything.  It blocks the view of the details.

ok ok I get it.  Even though I was not looking for opinions on the decor of the house.  The shirt is inexcusable, should have known someone would point that out.
