I am one that doesn't like the look of blank hats and shirts. Although it probably makes more sense to have blank uniforms when you go from travel tournament to travel tournament working with guys you don't know or work with often.

I personally think having a number (issued numbers from an association or conference) means you have risen to a high enough level to become identifiable. For example minor league umpires are not eligible to work MLB games until they have been issued a number. Major conference D1 umpires are given a number when asked to join the conference. Not to mention I think it adds to the overall professional look of the umpire with logos and numbers on shirts. Just my $0.02

Waht's the big deal, really?  Your assn., board, chapter, whatever, gives #'s?  Fine.  If not, fine too.

I think having a # lets people (fans, players, coaches) know that you've gone through some sort of vetting process, and that you have some knowledge of rules, mechanics and game management.  You might have gone out and just bought random numbers, but perception is reality.

And I still want to know if that's a lawn chair.
