taking the BR to third 90' diamond

Question

Would like to hear opinions on the mechanic, in 90', of the base umpire taking the BR to 3rd Vs. the plate covering 3rd and the base umpire covering home.  From what I have read most things say that the proper mechanic is for plate to come up but I don't really understand why and why this makes more sense.  Thoughts?

If BU isn't very mobile, I could see a case for PU coming up to take the play at 3rd. However, I think the better mechanic is for BU to take this play so PU can watch for an overthrow and be in position for the play at home.

When I work bases I tell my partner I have everything on the bases.  I am big but very mobile so I feel more comfortable taking the runner to 3B.

Some of this is crew-dependent and is part of a good pre-game when you talk about responsibilities.  Some guys want to do it by "the book", others are more comfortable doing what works for them.  There's not really a "right" answer as long as you get coverage.

Umpire mechanics are about best compromises. With 1 runner and 2 umpires, you don't have to compromise much. As @grayhawk points out, the only issue here is BU mobility. Even then: if BU can't get to the working area (maybe 65 feet from A) before BR runs 300+ feet, then that's a MAJOR mobility issue!

My state uses FED mechanics for HS games, and they want PU taking the play at 3B. So we do that for HS games. Otherwise, we pre-game this play: my general rule for plays at third is that as BU I will take them until I'm called off.

The standard in my area is for the base umpire to take the B-R into third always.  I like this system better for the same reasons greyhawk mentioned above.

Even when there is a mobility issue with the base umpire isn't it still easier for him to take the B-R to third rather than having to rotate all the way home?

As you've seen there are multiple ways and different groups use them both.  As to why -- in some groups, BU might not be able to make it all the way to third.

Or from a more practical sense, triples are usually trouble balls.  So if its to right, then BU is out and PU has it all.  If it's to left then PU is up nearly to third anyway, he might as well just stand there and take the call.

Still, for me and the levels I work , I prefer the BU has it all mechanic.

If the base umpire isn't injured and can't beat that runner to third,(he should be cutting across the field, not running with the runner), then it is possibly time for the umpire to retire. How bad would it look for the base umpire not to be able to get to home from second base in time for a play because the PU is at third? If I have the dish and my partner goes out, I want him to stay out and let me handle it all. I'm 54, short and fat, but they aren't going to beat me. I know how to cheat also.

I'm confused as to the mechanic of BU taking plays at the plate. If I (HP) take the runner into 3B, my responsibility is still to take all plaays at the plate. I've had a couple of "old school" guys rotate around and be ready for plays at the plate that never materialized. We quickly resolved that issue. I agree wholeheartedly with Mike's assessment of the situation.

In 2-man with no runners on, we are taught the BU has the BR to 3B, unless he has gone out on a trouble ball in which case the PU comes in and takes the BR everywhere.

There are some guys in my area that will add that if BU went out to RF, he can come back but only for a play at the plate.  This has to be pre-gamed and communicated in-game as well.

If the BU has come back to the plate in foul territory when you rotate up, he should be in a great position to take a play at the plate if there's an overthrow or if the ball squirts away from the fielder at third. If you're up near the cutout when the BR heads for home there's no reason that you couldn't bust back to the plate and take the play from the inside. But the best view of a play at home will be that of the BU, provided he's rotated back properly and is ready for a possible play. Both ways can work, but when done correctly, having the BU make the call is really sharp.

I'm 70 and have had my left knee replaced and I can still beat the runner to 3rd in our adult wooden bat league. If I go out I will usually start heading back towards HP in foul territory just in case something weird happens and the PU is unable to get there. This is always pre gamed

Unless you use one of the approved and accepted mechanic manuals that says HP has plays at the plate, even after he rotates to 3B (I use PBUC 2MAN).

Just sayin

Or you could use an approved manual for amature umpires where not all of them are as fleet of foot as young professional umpires. Personally, I'm fine with using either mechanic as long as it's been pre-gamed. Our HS and college association have the BU taking the play at the plate.

BU takes the BR to 3B everytime. PU stays home. Simple mechanic. The main reason is if the BU breaks off to bust it to the plate and the BR trips going around 2B, and then trys to crawl his way back to 2B and a play is made on him, who has the call. The PU is at 3B and the BU is probably running somewhere between 2B and the plate. Just makes more sense for the BU to take the BR all the way to 3B.

You're not making an allowance for trouble balls that dictate the BU is to take the ball. If he goes out, he needs to stay out and leave the bags to the PU. On non-trouble balls, I completely agree with you. No reason for the PU to rotate up.

Unless you're working FED mechanics...like in NJ for HS games... :wow:

With R1 plate umpire comes up the line to cover third.

Now, that's a whole other line of discussion.......

When the BU goes out on a trouble ball he's responsible for making sure there's no issue (ball rolling OOP etc.) and staying out until the ball is thrown back into the infield. If it's a straight up triple I don't think I'll have time to get home. If I can I will but the PU should be prepared to cover home everytime unless I communicate that I'm there.

You can't release until the ball is thrown by the outfielder. Once that happens beat feet for home, if you make great, if not the PU will take it. It beautiful when it works. Plus you can Captain Morgan the plate umpire if you make it. :)
