Umpiring takes a lot of time to umpire. With the travel, the games etc - many people can't can't the time to do afternoon games.

What is your real job?

I work for a local beer distributor as a draft tech. I have a pretty flexable schedule, but I can't get off early enough to do high school games. Maybe someday, but for now I'm calling as many youth games as possible and tourneys on the weekends.

Grad student with a fairly flexible schedule right now.  Moving on to the "real world" in the next couple months, it will be a wait and see.  I am a civil engineer who emphasizes in traffic.

I am a Firefighter (Captain) - I work 24 hour shifts, so lots of days off. Baseball is a great stress reliever after a bad day on the job - A bad day at the baseball diamond is better than a good day on the job!

I work in IT supporting operations in oil and gas. We keep fairly early hours and thankfully my schedule is a bit flexible that getting out to cover afternoon games is not usually an issue. If I ever make the leap to college though I'm not sure how flexible but at least I will have a decent vacation stash by then.

Umpiring was my only job up until three days ago.

I started working part time in the deli of a very popular grocery store near me on Tuesday. I only work three or four days a week, so the rest can be taken by games... In the summer when I'm done with school, I will probably try to take an earlier shift to get maximum baseball.

Yea, back when I was in the Army, I got out because there was NO WAY I could ever imagine retiring. It was just too far off.

My 20 years would have up last year @#$%@##@.

So if I wouldn't have been an idiot, I'd be retired and officiating full-time now. Alas, I'm a cube rat as a financial analyst. Luckily, I've been able to pretty much do 7-4, with a moderate amount of extra work at home when needed.

I'm an Industrial Maintenance Mechanic. Certified welder, journeyman Millwright. Right now working 3pm-11pm so HS is a no go. Dammit.

Finishing my undergraduate studies, most of the time my schedule is fairly flexible, outside of class i work as an undergraduate grunt in a lab and umpiring could probably be my job once it kicks in around here.

I'm in the HR department of a large For-Profit university. I have some flexibility and my boss works with me. I can leave early up to 2 times a week as long as it doesn't interfere with work.

I got out of the Navy after four years, decided I didn't want to do the same thing every day and start at the bottom of the barrel for minimum wage. I was back in after a couple of years and retired in 1995. Missed my kids so much I almost got out after 15 years. Luckily I met my current wife and she talked me into sucking it up for the rest of my career. Although I hated most of the latter part of my career, it sure is nice to have that pension and medical insurance. Believe me, I know what you're feeling. Now I need to find a job that won't interfere with my umpiring.

I'm a school bus driver/substitute for the county alternative school. High school/middle school games start at 5 and I'm off by 3:30 so it works out well.

I work in business development for a technology company focused on helping large brands extend their web properties to mobile.

I am the Chief Financial Officer of a privately-held automotive supplier.  It's going to be difficult this season leaving early to make the 4 o'clock/4:30 p.m. start times I have on my schedule for HS ballgames.  But, I work more than my fair share of hours during the week it shouldn't make a difference.  Our motto here is you do what it takes to get the job done.  My goal is to manage my schedule to allow me the opportunity to umpire during the Spring. Quite frankly, I really need to get out on the diamond.  I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Easiest job in the world. HS senior!

My daughter would disagree. She's still real busy between work, scholarship essays, AP classes, assorted school activities, and the tension of waiting to hear back from two more colleges.

Teacher.  Done by 3:15 to make those 4 and 4:30 games.  Schedule frees me up on the weekends and summer.

I'm an optician for a major eyeglass chain. Fortunately, I'm in charge of making the weekly schedules, so during high school season, I schedule myself 9-2  2 or three days a week and work longer shifts til closing 2 nights. Unfortunately I work a lot of Saturdays, but I give my crew a lot of Saturdays off so they work Sundays for me and I can get 2-3 games in most Sundays and an occasional Saturday night game. I'll take 2 or 3 weekends each summer for a few tourneys if I can.

Civil engineer specializing in bridge design.  I am VERY lucky that my boss is understanding of my "need" to umpire and grants me the flexability to make those 4 PM games.  As long as the work gets done, he is happy.

In all seriousness your right. The work does not stop. However once college is set up it is a huge weight off of your shoulders. Hope it works out well for her.
