Dumpable statement?

The player who said the comment in question was warned? If yes he's gone. If not I think it would depend on his tone and if there was a gesture to go along with what he said.

I do not suffer players and coaches questioning my integrity. I would've dumped him without warning.

No warning, just launch him.  Implying in anyway that we are out there to cheat someone is always an auto in my book.  Statements of that nature only lead to more and bigger problems when things still don't go their way.  Move them on and the game will settle down and it can be played as intended.

Josh - "Thanks Gregg. It won't happen again."

Kid came out, shook my hand and apologized. No harm, no foul.

You'll never regret the ejection.   You might regret not ejecting.  A kid questioning your integrity, gone.  Too many umpires don't have the seeds to eject when they should, they warn, thinking that is good game management, when in fact it just makes it tougher on the next umpire.

They think a statement that "infers" rather than a statement that is "explicit" makes them immune from prosecution, oops, ejection. They love to try and use inferred conversation and any type of "show you up" "verbal" statements" that they can try to get way with.

 

This is all part of the ruse that the umpire is being aggressive, arrogant etc., etc., and meant to make the umpires look bad if and when they get ejected, and the coaches and players are being, what's that word, oh yes, disrespected (in which disrespect is directly related to the call against them and means something that doesn't go their way). Then when you call them on it with an ejection, here comes the old , what did I do? I didn't do anything? I didn't curse you personally. I didn't use any profanity. You got a chip on your shoulder. Your just looking for trouble. You can't run me for that. I didn't say anything personal. You'll never work my games again, etc, etc. Be alert and careful, mainly for the coaches, and sometimes players, that try and get away with verbally inferring something. Well guys, it's 11 on 9 today after a close call. Coach is inferring you are cheating, and questioning your integrity. Umpires are hired for their impartiality and integrity. Don't let them spit all over it.  There are many other examples as you well know. It is not rabbit ears to immediately act on these type situations. Put a lid on it and clamp down immediately.

 

Sound like you did just fine in this instance, and since this kid was already on warning, he is the one responsible for continuing anything verbal after the warning. He needs to go look in  the mirror if he wants to place blame.

Had a kid look back and give me the stink eye on a strike call. He was about 1 second away from getting a real short game. But he didn't do anything else so I let it slide.

 

I do regret not shutting down the trash talking we had in a Varsity Tourney game Saturday.

 

The starting pitcher from the visiting team had a mullet, it's a country team, so yeah. The home team was making Billy Ray Cyrus jokes, mullet jokes, etc. There was nothing chippy on the field that we noticed, but the coach noticed.

 

I should have stepped in and warned both teams to knock it off, nipped it in the butt early. I did finally later in the game talk to the home team coach because they were they ones I could hear.

 

Just curious, when do you guys as officials step in and take care of the situation?

Yea, you have to shutdown the bench jockeying right when it starts or it gets worse. I issue a warning to the team that I heard make the remarks, not both teams. BTW,  The expression is "Nip it in the bud".

So you almost ejected a guy because he "looked" at you? Let me get this right...he didnt say anything...he just stared? Since when did looking at someone become an ejectable offense???

I called a technical foul this season on a player who rolled his eyes at me.

 

Since when is there an explicit list of ejectable offenses, anyway?

I also have never restricted a coach in HS yet. I had an adult try to check his swing, PU came to me and I banged him for strike three. He took his bat and helmet, laid it on the plate and walked away. PU dumped him. Words are not the only thing that can get you tossed.

Oh, I know well your abilities and I have read some of your reports. I guess I need to proof before I push send.  But as you well know, many groups think ejections are bad. Bad ejections are bad, that's why we get reports, but good ejections should not be quantified.

Three things that I am hoping for this summer

1) that I can make it up to Spokane at the end of July.

2) that MS can make it to Spokane as well.

3) that Rich decides to go to Spokane too.

To be able to meet these guys and soak up the knowledge and stories from these guys would be absolutely awesome!
