Guess he's been doing his shrugs to get those neck muscles up to speed. Tried one of those things for two games but after having used the Wilson and Nike Ti's for years, it felt like Wile E. Coyote had slipped an anvil onto the bill of my cap. But hey, whatever gets ya through the season.

I'd like to strap on the V2 sometime. I tried on the V1, and even cinched up tight, as designed, found it to be a bit too heavy for me, and the vision wasn't as good as my other masks (too far away from my face). 

 

But wearing it tight, instead of hanging off your hat, does make a difference on how heavy it feels. I like the concept, but think the end product still needs some work.

The difference between the V1 and V2 is pretty big. I have a thick neck, (to go a long with my belly), and had no issues with V1 weight or sight lines.  The only issue I had with V1 was the set of springs at the forehead area. There was not a whole lot of padding between the springs and your head, like a small amount and when you would get hit with a shot in the middle of the mask it would drive those springs into your forehead.  As with the chest protector V2, Jason listened to every bit of feedback he received from customers and made changes to the designs accordingly.  Big one to the mask was relocation to the side springs and the removal of the forehead springs. Vast improvements to already great products.  I don't have any idea what he could do to the leg guards?

Jason (and Force3) is so much more reactive and proactive about improving Force3's lineup. Notice the difference in methodology of sales and marketing: there was a Defender V1, now there's a Defender V2... can you still buy a V1? No, not through retail channels. There was an UnEqual V1 and now, after great improvements, there's a V2... can you still buy a V1? Again, no, not through retail channels. The DynaLite Aluminum is supposed to be an improvement over the DynaLite steel alloy, right? And the Platinum CP is/was supposedly an improved design over the Gold, was it not?... <cricket chirp>... See my point?

I wore a Defender V1 and while I admired the concept, I disliked the execution. It stood a noticeable distance from your face, and the peripheral vision was hampered or downright impeded. The reduction of spring assemblies from 4 to 3, and their subsequent repositioning I'm sure is an improvement in weight, vision and performance – I just have yet to try a V2 on. Because of the presence of those spring assemblies the mask could get lighter still by using aluminum on the outer structure (strong, but rigid and unyielding... meaning the bars won't deform), with the energy transferred to the spring assemblies mounted to the hollow-steel (which the mask wholly is now) inner structure. That might be a thought?

As far as the shinguards are concerned, they are already a near-perfect product. I've only found two shortcomings in my use of them: the first is the need of an abrasion-resistant material at the inner bottom of the guard where they are prone to rubbing against your plate shoes, namely the NB460 in that mid-cut; the second is, with the plethora of guys doing Hands-on-Knees stance, the upper edge of the guards could be reshaped to be more hand-friendly. As utterly contemptible the DavisShield CP is, the shinguards are shaped rather well to accommodate and facilitate the HoK stance Davis championed.

Good point about the bottom of the shin guards. I'm sure Jason is paying attention to our comments. He has never hesitated to correspond with me and gives honest answers, even dropping teaser hints about products.  Good write up by you. Thanks.

A. They get them for free.

B. They're quite strong.

C. They're fairly light. Not Ti light, but not really that heavy.

I use the Diamond that Gerry Davis sells, and its very light. Is the Wilson that light?

The Wilson ti and aluminum are that light. I don't see a lot of MLB guys now a days wearing the old school Wilson dynalight made from steel. Which was light when it came out but to today's standards is not that light. I see aluminum or ti or nike frames. But im no expert.

The steel? God no! The new aluminum or titanium? Yeah it's about the same. My Nike titanium is lighter than its Wilson counterpart. The Wilson aluminum is about the same weight as the Diamond but I think the Diamond is just a bit lighter.

Then you're not looking.  Its still worn by more than two dozen MLB guys.  And Gerry has been wearing the Diamond since last year.  This is his second season with it.
