I came across this clip of a pitcher waving bye-bye to the third batter he struck out to end the inning-immaculate inning style-on just 9 total pitches.

Should he be ejected for this move?

No. That’s not EJ worthy. Have a talk with his coach that half inning to knock it off. Likely, it won’t happen again.

IMHO not EJ worthy, but talk to coach before it can escalate or have opposing team wanting to retaliate.

I'm gonna assume he's being DH'd for, because a pitch bouncing off his helmet would have WAY more impact on his attitude than a "talkin' to" from an umpire.

....... not that I *advocate* that as an umpire, of course.

yep, and it would be illegal pitch, takes hand off ball other than to pitch, and puts it back on ball, with nobody on.

also, i believe NF is big on taunting (blatant, designed, premeditated, intentional and overboard IMHO in this case if you ask me).

Who cares? How is this noteworthy? According to the article, this was “savage”. Have we lost any sense of what words and descriptions really mean? My generation would define “savage” as ending up in the hospital with an EKG beeping away. Now, this latest noodle-spined generation considers “savage” as anything that might cause embarrassment… which, go figure, this latest generation is hyper-attuned to feelings.

In NJ, it would fall into the forbidden "negative behavior, such as taunting, trash-talking and verbal, written, or physical conduct related to race, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, or religion. Such behavior will result in being ejected from this event."

If we do not enforce it we will be held accountable by the NJSIAA, which sanctions nearly all high school sporting events and the "privilege" of officiating said events.

If that happens in my game and I do not address it immediately I will likely receive a call from my assigner and the state interpreter wanting to know why it was ignored, and I would probably have all post season assignments revoked. If I do enforce it, I know that I will have a sh*thouse on my hands.

“Taking hand off the ball” is indeed in the NFHS wording, but you forgot the other part of the sentence….. “while in a set position.” And since his motion was already started (either windup/set), it doesn’t violate anything. That rule is for when the pitcher is set, and before starting his delivery, takes his hand off the ball. That’s not this situation.

This is nothing but a “knock it off.”

Contrary to it being just a pitcher trying to distract a batter, in OBR and NCAA there is an actual rule against a fielder deliberately attempting to distract the batter—current OBR rule 6.04(c) and NCAA rule 5-15a-3. The pro rule uses the word fielder and the college rule uses the word player—in both cases I would say the pitcher qualifies as someone who cannot distract the batter. High school does not have a rule specifically against a fielder deliberately attempting to distract the batter but its rule 3-3-1f is pretty broad in its coverage of unsportsmanlike actions.

It is indeed on the cue card. It is also one of the reasons I am working less HS baseball this spring.

I have more NCAA baseball and more men's volleyball until the summer seasons start and then its only local collegiate leagues.
