What was inappropriate about Baker's call, Maven?

From my standpoint, nothing at all.

F2 was working him: I was imagining how that went.

Gotcha!  I concur...

UIC: That's interference!

F2: What?

UIC: Your glove hit his bat on the swing.

F2:  I didn't hit his bat; his bat hit my glove!

UIC: Exactly.

F2: What?

...or was it a foul tip???

Lately I been having trouble distinguishing between catcher's interference and a foul tip.  The OP was obvious, but those really close ones where the batter swings and the catcher's glove is very close to the ball, F2 catches the ball and you hear 2 sounds, but you can't tell if its bat on ball, then ball in mitt..... or bat on mitt, then ball in mitt

 Anyone else have this problem?

Typically on catchers interference, the catcher will give a reaction whether it be he moves his gloves towards his body, or he'll be holding his hurt hand, and/or the glove will come off the catchers hand. I have not personally seen a catcher catch the ball on CI

I'm sure we've all heard 2 sounds in this situation and not known 100% if the bat hit the ball or the mitt.  If you aren't sure, then slow down and use the players' reactions to help guide you.  Most of the time, the bat hit the ball and not the mitt and nobody says a word.  Don't rock the boat unless you're 100% sure.

Don't like too, but relying on the players' reactions is what I've been doing, especially the batter, as I find this is something they won't usually sell if it did not happen.  I know CI does not usually result in F2 catching the ball, but if I'm really unsure, after the pitch I will step out from behind the plate slowly in the opposite batter's box, if both are just preparing for the next pitch not looking at me, I ignore

Maven was channeling the Hawk!

What would be the second sound?

What would be the second sound?

The ball glancing off the catcher's mitt.  Those are the times it's difficult to tell which happened first.  Bat hitting ball, then ball hitting mitt?  Or bat hitting mitt, then bat hitting ball?

I'm tracking the pitch...I am not good enough to actually see CI. If I hear the 2 sounds and the ball has gone straight back, I assume no CI (ball hit mitt). If I hear the 2 sounds and the ball has gone elsewhere, I assume CI.

And as always, I assume the risks of assuming.

How can you call that at a time like this with bases loaded?????

Point to F2, "That's interference!"

After play has ceased, "Time! That's interference! You (to R3) score, you 3B, you 2B, you 1B."

Just like that. ;)

I agree with this.  These are very tough.  The ones where the glove doesn't come off are the hardest to get.  This is a harder call on the less obvious ones.  We are looking through the catcher, the batter, the bat, ball, and mitt.  This really is an excellent call.

IDK about you guys but I LOVE the awarding of the bases. He put an emphasis on it that you rarely see in MLB because the players somehow are expected to know their awards. He didn't award the middle guys (I guess they can figure it out).
