He asks for the worst of the worst coaches.   Screamers.  Berators. Psycho parents.  Bring em on.  He wants to practice his game management and loves to be dropped behind enemy lines.

I've been sent as a hired gun too on a few occasions. Once a "director level" person told me specifically I was going there to eject _________ even if he gives me a cross look.

 

Never once when I have been sent to a game to be a hired gun have I even had an issue.

Also now that MSN has picked up the story I wonder if this will gain some legs.

 

I think what he did was absolutely wrong, but I will say as an analyst on MLB network he is pretty objective and does back the umps when he feels they are right. even a few nights ago he and Harold Reynolds got into it a little with Mitch on the umps side and Howard on the managers.

 

I think there is also more to the story.

@Umpire in Chief - consider the umpires he's 'backing' too. And there are 4 of them on the field. With instant replay in mission control. It's easy to back Fonzie or JJ or Angel. They have readily available stats. I'm willing to bet Mitch is "THAT GUY" that makes sure the low level umpires know who he is and tries to use it to his advantage.
