I ordered a pair of Smitty Poly Wool pants from ump attire and was told these are a great product and the size is true. Well once I got the pants I had them hemmed and I feel they are not true plate pants.  The legs feel too skinny to be plat pants.  If I could get my money back I would, but I cant, so I am going to have to eat these. But I wont order from UA again, it will be honigs.

curious, who said the size was true?  I have no experience with Smitty Poly Wools, but I would think customers who bought it and posted positive comments on it would truly think they fit well, and that would need to be balanced by looking for opinions from other places. Or did you talk to someone specific at UA that said they fit like Honigs pants?

I always try my plate pants on with my shins before I get them hemmed and then again at the tailor shop. That is a great practice to start.

On the Poly-wool subject, Jim and UA have no plans to carry any other poly wools at this time. I guess there deal with Hardwicks did not work out and the company that they tried to use last year went out of business. It looks like Honig's will be the place for Poly-Wools in the future. I have not heard a good report on the Smitty Poly wool. Would love someone that has both to do a comparison.

I have not seen real positive reviews on the Smitty PW's either.  I love the U-A ones, glad I got 5 pairs before they ran out.

Did you try to return them post-hemming and were told you cannot, or are you just assuming that?  I have had good luck with Ump-Attire the few times I have had to return stuff.

Just curious which shins you are using?

Yeah, in the future try the pants on w/ the shins and plate shoes.

I will never buy the Smitty plate pants.  Never.

They simply aren't as good as the Hardwick's pants.

I have a pair of Smitty's plate and I like them.  I have Honig's shins and Diamond triple knee. I haven't had issues at all with my shins sticking to them.  They are comfortable and look good.  They wash well and retain their crease.  Yes, they are a different shade of gray than Honig's poly's, but in my area you see all different types of charcoals.  Gerry Davis' charcoals' are extremely popular in my area.   I just bought my first pairs of Honig's and am looking forward to wearing them.  Smitty's may not be considered top of the line like Honig's, BUT, for the price the quality and comfort is fine.  And I bought them @ Ump Attire.

I bought a pair of plate and base PW pants from UA when they had them. For some reason the top of my WV Pro shins showed through and was almost the reason I didnt get into the college unit (had to nit pick because all the candidates were so closely ranked). Only pants I will buy will be PWs from Honigs.

Start with the best, forget the rest.

Don't see how this is an Ump-Attire problem.  They don't know your body type, shin guards, etc.  Did you wear your shin guards and plate shoes when you went to the tailor?  It would be pretty easy to tell if they were not the right fit before you had them hemmed.  I suspect that if you did that, and asked UA if they would take the return before they were hemmed, they would have without question.

That said, I agree that the Honigs Poly Wools are the way to go.  You tried the Smitty's and got what you paid for.  Don't blame Ump-Attire.

Agree. Well said

I have Smitty PW's and I love them. They've held up amazingly well and fit well over my shins. I dunno why everyone has such a problem with them.

As far as UA goes, I have dealt with them many times with different things and they have always been helpful. I have yet to have a problem returning anything or exchanging. Very helpful and always nice. Nothing but 5 stars all around.

I bought the Smitty Heather Grey plate and base slacks for softball at the beginning of the year from ump-attire without any issues. I suggest you check the labels to make sure that they are plate pants and not base or combos.

Purchased a pair of Smitty plate pants 3 years ago. Loved the look, construction and overall quality. I however can't wear the

them... For me they run tight in the seat and thighs. Just plain ol' uncomfortable!

With such a big butt I don't see how any pants fit comfortably!

I purchase smitty base and plate pants, pw, and the legs of the base pants are slimmer than the plate pants. That being said the plate pants legs are no where near the width of the Honigs pw. Ilike the Smittys , but wish I had spent $20 more.

Ok, ...hang on a minute, ....let me make sure I understand this ....

You've mentioned in quite a few posts that you've done "pro ball" ....... great, .....but this leads me to 2 questions.

1) If you've done pro ball, why would you order "Smitty Poly Wools"?

2) I would think that you'd know better to try them on BEFORE having them hemmed, especially if you've never had Smitty Poly Wools?

:HS

This ....to me ....is NOT an Ump-Attire issue

Posted

Yep, what do you expect them to do w/ pants that have already been hemmed that are not defective?

I've done a lot of things in my life where I wish I could've blamed somebody else.  But unfortunately many things begin and end with the man in the glass.

Suck it up.  We all make mistakes, just don't make the same mistake twice.

Posted

I used to work pro ball, but am trying to keep cost low.  I did try them on prior to being hemmed and they looked fine at the time, but after being hemmed, they look too skinny.

then you didn't try them on w/ guards on .........(I'd venture to guess)

AGAIN ....that's not Ump-Attire's fault.

wvumpire1807, my apologies for your frustration.  We have received a couple calls on this issue, more than likely you were one of them.  I contacted Smitty to see if I could get the specs for their poly-wools so I could compare what I have here to what they are supposed to be.  Understandably, they wouldn't give me the specs but they did say that all of their pants are based off the same patterns, so a plate is a plate, a base is a base and a combo is a combo across all styles.  So armed with that, I checked all of our poly-wools against a charcoal plate pant and I found that several of the poly-wools were not measuring up, in other words a combo cut labeled as a plate pant.

Who's to blame?  The factory?  The supplier?  The retailer?  Everybody really, I have to rely on Smitty to send me what I order, they rely on the factory for the same.  The majority of the time, we all get it right, but sometimes we don't.  So please feel free to contact service@ump-attire.com and I will have Myra take care of your issue.~Paul

Im anxious to see what Myra will do.  I don't want Smitty plate pants and that's all they sell.

Contact them and let us know how it goes, no need to drag it out here at this point...

I have several pairs of the Smitty plate pants (not PW) and have had no issues with fit.
