Ask yourself this, would your last mile in a marathon be the same speed as your first mile?
Yes

I will take all the games they give me. Bring it on! My quality will be 100% till the end!

I know you are kidding, at least I hope so, but if that is true then your quality in the first game needs to go up.

I've only done 6 games ONE time .... rotating bases and plate each game .....

It's not uncommon to do a 5 game day ....tough, but doable ....but my preference mentally and physically, in a tournament situation is 4 per day.  It's easy to get your arms around, 2 plates, 2 bases, ...done!

And, .... the better the quality of baseball, the easier it is .......

Yeah, I was thinking if you aren't very good when you start, the quality can't go down.  :rollinglaugh:

Two is ideal for me.

One is often not worth getting in the car for, living in a pretty rural area I do not like driving longer than the game lasts.

I will do three if my assigner really needs me, but they at least better be good games.

I would decline any assignment with more games.

Once I did 5 games and I felt okay at the end of the day. I was exhausted, but that's what I expected. I didn't expect it to take me a week to fully recuperate from the muscle aches, pains and overall fatigue.

But those 5 games made a 14 hour day, how can you even do more?

on a typical weekend here in North Texas, I do between 10 and 16 games in 2 days.  I try not do do more than 3 plates in a row although I have done 6 plates in a row once.  Most games I have done in one day is 8 in a day.  I try to keep 7 games a day a my max and get 1 game off between my 4th and 5th games and just that short break is enough to keep me going through the day.

How old are you?

Are we talking about Baseball or Poker?

I've had 12 hour Poker marathons......

Running is not baseball. My miles generally are within about 5 seconds of each other from start to finish.

In August we had a provincial qualifier U14 tournament, which means teams travel a considerable distance to play. We had 2 fields going, with 6 umpires scheduled to do the tournament. Well 2 of the umpires from another association backed out so we had to scramble and got 2 junior guys to fill in. Nether of them could be trusted to do plates at this level. They were just warm bodies. So Saturday morning the other experienced guy on our crew severely pulled a groin and was put out of action. I told the UIC to try and find someone else. He couldn't and it turned out that I ended up doing 6 plates in a row. It's a good thing it was a 1:45 time limit and we had a couple of mercys. It was about 85 deg out and at the end of the day I was whipped. I know I was not at my best at the end but there were no complaints that I heard. At age 70 I am too old to do that very often. On Sunday I only did 2 games, 1 on the plate and 1 on the bases.

3 max.

I'm 56, I used to do more but I don't think you get your money's worth after 3 with me.  Plus I'm all about quality games as opposed to quantity, now.

I am done after 3. I can do 2 fields and a plate, and have done 2 plates and a field.

I prefer 2.

I've done a 12 plate weekend before (2 Friday, 6 Saturday, 4 Sunday)... That was just idiotic though, I don't think I would do it again.

I've got a couple weekends coming up here where I've got four solo games in the day, age groups of 12u-16u... That's pushing my max, but I'm confident that I can do it.

What are the time limits on these games you guys are doing where you do 5+ games?

The tourney I did 5 there was 2:15 no new inning drop dead 2:25.

I had games at 8:00, 10:30, 3:30, 6:00 & 8:30. Now I could have had 6, but I was (thankfully) not scheduled for the 1:00 round.

I assign a lot of HS college prospect showcase tournaments during the summer and they pay pretty well.  I have umpires insist on working 6 games (or the max games on a field) a day or they won't work.  They will do anywhere from 9-15 games on the weekend depending on the schedule. It's a nice paycheck but I won't work more than 4 in a day.

Yeah, I believe that.

My point is that you are doing a disservice to the people your working for if you work so many games in a row.  Just my opinion, though.

My miles are generally the same too, it just depends on how many traffic lights I hit.

I prefer two, can do 4 if I need to (2 plate, 2 base), and have done 6 maybe twice or three times.  6 games starting at 8am turned into a 15 hour day by the time I got in the car to go to the park until I pulled in my driveway.  That's insane, and I won't do it again.  If the assigner wants to let someone else take all 6, be my guest.   Unfortunately, the assigner for the major tournament group in our area is one of those guys that would rather have one umpire work the entire field instead of him actually having to assign and split games up to provide the teams adequate and fresh umpires, rather than mentally and physically drained umpires by game 6.

I would not be this assigner. As an assigner, I assign , at most, 3 games a day to my guys , even if they are the younger guys who say they will work more per day. I have ended up giving more per day only due to guys cancelling.. Personally , I will only work 2 per day due to my age.

My magic number is three. Since everyone has bad days calling games I was wondering what do you guys do if your having one and have 5 games to do

If I have a bad game (missed calls) it is almost always due to improper timing. If I have more games, I have to remember timing (slow down). If I have many games (covering games only due to lack of umpires) then I have to be very conscious of timing. But once fatigue takes over and I'm not sure of what I saw, the best timing doesn't help...then I'm battling to complete the games I accepted.

1 pitch, 1 game at a time.

Do not harp on it.

Agreed that its a bad analogy.  If your miles are all the same, then your first mile isn't as good (fast) as it could be.  That's the point for the baseball.

it also gets to "why do you do this" and those who take more than about 3 are in it more for the money than those who "never" do more than 2.  Nothing wrong with that, but just recognise it.

I believe that one's abilities would diminish during a long day, but if the alternative is to put a guy with less experienced/skilled as a seasoned umpire the results may be better with the fatigued seasoned guy. I often get roped into more than the 3 timed USSSA tournament games per day that I prefer. I know I'm not at my best late in the day, but I might be better than a teenage alternative.

and if you keep doing the games then the "teenage alternative" won't get the experience and wont get better.

(and the "you" is meant to refer to all who work that many, not to be an indictment of ricka)
