  1. I've had nearly a dozen plays this year with this situation. On only one have I ruled OBS. On most of the rest, the offensive has argued for it. This is a bad rule and needs to be adjusted. As a former catcher I'm all for protecting F2, but these MLB replay rulings are doing us amateur umpires no favors.

    DB catcher

What??? Seriously? That's a strike all day, every day at U16. Unless you like 3 hour games.
  3. I worked with one guy this year that said "steeeee-rike". Hated that.

    Baiting A Coach

Know where you are before you refuse. OBR 9.02(c ) Comment: Appeals on a half swing may be made only on the call of ball and when asked to appeal, the home plate umpire must refer to a base umpire for his judgment on the half swing. NCAA 3-6-f: When asked by a coach or player, the plate umpire must seek a decision from the appropriate base umpire regarding the “half swing.†FED 10-1-4-a The umpire-in-chief sometimes asks for aid from the base umpire when there is a question as to whether a batter’s “half swing†is such as to be called a strike. So if some jackwagon rat asks for an appeal after every pitch, you MUST grant it?
  5. Did you see it fair?
  6. If by "spectacular" you mean "How the F^*K does a major league F4 allow that to happen???" I'm in perfect agreement.
  7. Great players and managers all, but I never really warmed up to any, except maybe Maddux. LaRussa and Cox always struck me as a-holes, while Torre was fine until he settled in with the Evil Empire. Thomas was an amazing hitter, for sure, but playing for the White Sox for so long, he kind of got lost in the mix. Glavine, while being a local (Billerica) product, rubbed me the wrong way with his union stances and tone-deaf comments. All worthy HOF's, IMHO, though.
  8. Be nice. Until it's time not to be nice.
  9. Extraordinarily bad advice. Don't call nit-picky balks. Call balks.
  10. The only thing you did wrong was getting close enough for the AC to brush you. Stay away from ACs between innings at all costs. If that's the line I usually go up, I'll go up the other one. Oh. Wait. In this case, I wouldn't have had to worry about that, because I would have tossed home after the "certain place" reference. This one is on you my friend. Not judging. Learn from it.
  11. I love weird al.
  12. Not sure if I'd announce IFF if fair. That's injecting confusion into a situation that doesn't need any more drama. You're not enforcing it, so why invite the rat to ask why you called it?
  13. Call the glove.
  14. Never ever doubt what nobody is sure about. And yeah, I've NEVER seen a baseball player do something that doesn't make any sense is hindsight.
  15. I'm in B with R3 and 2 out.

    Death Stare

That's what one of my buddies says at plate meetings. If I look at ya' I've heard ya'. If my mask comes off......somebody's leavin'". He's a VERY good HS umpire (this year's State Association ump of the year) in Kentucky. He's also a Kentucky State Trooper Sergeant and a poster boy/former recruiting officer for what Troopers should look like. I called him RoboCop/RoboUmp. Absolutely perfect physique and presence. Completely unnecessary. Total cop move. Why threaten to toss someone at the plate meeting?

    Death Stare

Death Stare kills. STFU stare renders recipient speechless
  20. I have one and use it for Jr Legion in the summer. It's very comfortable. I've even taken a couple good shots with it with no ill effects. I don't have the abdominal extension, though.
  21. Had CI the other night in a Legion game. Third base coach killed the play by announcing it (after I announced it) -I don't think he heard or saw me, but I'll get into that in a minute - so everyone stopped and I made the award. The offensive base coaches came out in the 1st inning without helmets. I got an email from my assignor that morning - it goes out to everyone on my board - informing us that base coaches have to wear helmets, so I enforced it. The coaches weren't happy, as they had no base helmets. They had to wear regular helmets, so they couldn't hear anything, e.g. the coach not hearing my interference call, and they looked ridiculous. Which amused me to no end for the rest of the game.
  22. if you're far enough into the slot, you have a great view of the glove. If the catchers glove doesn't move when he receives it, he's framing the pitch. Rocket science lesson for today. For varsity baseball on up, call the glove. Below varsity, call as many strikes as you can. YMMV.
  23. This is the best part...Was your partner there...eating crow should have spoiled his italian food appetite. He was "there" hes got a job and was out of town on a work trip so he skyped in, the board is paying him 25% for that week provided he uses it on a mask not duck taped together Wait. What? You get paid by the week?
  24. When the camera finally gets to the third base area, F5 has caught the ball and is moving toward the bag (he's fairly near it at this point). that's enough to meet the "play" requirements on this. I just think that's a more likely reason than a step balk.
