how about if you commit to a game stick to it and dont bail out for a better game?

Maybe it's just me, but I have NEVER heard a comment about my glasses while officiating a game. I have been sprayed in the face with the top layer grit/silt on pitches "in the dirt" to the point that it "stung" my face and I was glad of the eye protection my glasses afforded so that I did not get that crap in my eyes. My lenses also have a UV protection coating which may very well put off the day I need cataract surgery. JM

You don't call the play at 1st, you dummy. You call the interference and call the runner out at 1st because of the interference. You can work both plates tomorrow so I don't have to worry about you missing that call again.

Ditto I had a JV coach who was on his way to the parking lot anyway tell me that I need new glasses. I had already booted him (and a player) on a close play at 3B. This was one of the first games that I had started wearing my glasses. It didn't affect me in the least.

@24sdad, if you work deep enough in the working area and you have opened your field of view, it could be possible to see the tag/touch. If this isn't possible, then you have to stay with the catch/no catch. @thunderheads, it might be that you have two sets of eyes viewing the same catch. You have only one person who is responsible for making the catch/no catch call,, though. Again, as in U2 opening their field of view by working deeper in the working area, the PU must work to align F7 with R3 tagging, in order to see the touch/tag play at 3rd. There have been times when I had to go as deep as the backstop fence to get as much angle as possible to view the tag up.

Would it be a sidebar to recommend laser eye surgery? I had it 6 years ago and wish I had done it sooner.

what does this have to do with anything in this thread? Not sure what you mean? You're not? This thread is about wearing glasses or contacts due to taking off your mask and the glasses being in the way. What does this link have to do with the topic?? A product that keeps lenses from fogging while wearing glasses doesn't seem too irrelevant to me. Seems BigUmpire is just mentioning a cure to another issue that could arise while wearing glasses under a mask.

And just a reminder, don't be in such a hurry to take that glance over at R1. F7 "catches" the ball, BU quickly glances back at R1's position as the crowd and dugout's go wild. BU turns back to F7 and the ball is rolling on the ground. How did it get there? Make sure the def. of a catch is fulfilled before you take that glance back.

Good EJ but you should have got him on the first comment from the dugout. I've no tolerance for profane yelling around children (at least on the field )

I never have heard any comments on the rare occasion I wear my glasses, but I only do that when my eyes are bothering me too much to wear contacts. I seem to get more comments from people who see me umpire and then see me off the field with glasses ("Oh, I didn't know you wore glasses") One issue I have is that I no longer own a pair of single-vision glasses, all my glasses are bifocals or reading glasses. Makes it easy to read the lineups but when I first started wearing bifocals doing the plate was a challenge as I was getting used to the multi-vision lenses. I sometimes find that when I wear my glasses (1-2 times a year) on the plate I move my head a bit with the pitch to keep everything in the top of the lens. I suppose this is a habit I've picked up from about 5 years of wearing bifocals, but I don't seem to do it with contacts in. Oh to stay on topic, I have never had a problem with my glasses and a mask. But, I don't take my cap off with my mask either so maybe I've figured it out!

I wouldn't have killed it. No one reacted - you didn't see it - how could he see it? PU is 2' from the play - you are good. Why cause a problem when no problem exists??

Honestly, save up a little more, and buy the Honigs frame, loaded with Team Wendy pads. It'll save you money down the line.

Arbiter will not allow double booking. Once assigned another assigner can not assign anything to you during that time period. Regardless if it is because you set a block or have a assignment.

He argued nearly every close call on the bases. He argued balls and strikes until I gave him the warning. On my way to the gate after the game he called "You cost us the game, Steve!" Game is over. He should go, but I am ten feet from the gate and I am done. Then he said "You're terrible!" Everyone knows that. That's not news. I'm still leaving. But as I put my hand on the latch and pulled the gate open. . . "You need to read the rule book!" There it is.

As probably most of you have heard by now, there was a bombing at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. At least 2 people killed, many, many more injured. A great tradition of sports and international competition has been bloodied by some terrorist in a planned attack. My prayers are with the victims and the people of Boston.

Always have SPF 30 (my brother, who is soon to be a pharmacist in about a month said anything over 30 is just ripping you off) spray on in my bag. This way you don't have to get your hands all greasy. Apply liberally, reapply every game or 2.

The senior guys in my chapter are busting my balls because I'm enforcing (for school ball) 7-3-1 - keeping the batter in the box. This blows my mind. Almost every game this year, it has started in the first inning - batters going out off the dirt area getting signs. I'm getting the attitude "Well, if they abuse it, then put a stop to it". The reason they abuse it is because we don't enforce it! This is 1 + 1 stuff.

1) Watch the MLB umps. They will point foul when the ball is touched/caught. 2) Now to update my ignore list.

Be careful - different versions of the rule exist. WHEN: LL and FED: Obstruction unless the fielder actually has the ball. OBR and NCAA: Can block if the ball is in flight and close enough that the fielder has to be there. Without the ball (given the above): FED: Must allow access to the base. Everyone else: Cannot block the base OTHER: LL and FED: A fake tag is obstruction. OBR and NCAA: A fake tag is a legal deke. WHEN TO CALL IT: Given the above conditions, when the fielder's position causes the runner to need to alter his path to the base or slow down, or slide unnecessarily. Within reason. If the runner is 50' away and slows that's on him.

I wash my poly-wools on cold water and iron them while wet. This is an old dry cleaner trick for dress shirts & dress pants - wash them, press them while they're wet, then hang dry to let them "cure". I tried it on my pants and it works great. No damage from ironing and they look sharp/crisp every time.

If you really want to get technical he was called out for being out of HIS basepath.

Next time you need a new pair of pants...buy poly-wools. Take good care of them and they should last you 10+ years. Each time you need to purchase a new pair of pants....buy more poly-wools.....then before you know it..... your back up pants will be poly-wools. Then every time you step on the field you will look like a Pro.
