The reason for one man games is due to Cali not giving enough money to pay for two. This has been the situation for a long time. Plus we are so low on the number of umpires that one is all we may have available. And it's only getting worse.

There is a way to fix that.

North Carolina:

$82 varsity;  $71 JV.  Zero mileage.

It makes me miss San Antonio for reasons *other* than Tex-Mex and brisket.

NJ is $90 for varsity with no mileage. I've heard it will be $105 in 2024 mostly because of a serious lack of umpires staying in baseball. A large percent have migrated to softball only because of many factors including time and age.

Huh. I thought for sure it was because you/they have to fish out the cue card at every plate meeting and have the compulsory recitation of the Code of Sportmanship. 🙄

…

I’d be done after 1. :blah

The problem with the softball migration is that schools continue to pay the same for both.  Increasing baseball pay isn’t going to keep guys in baseball if you are also upping softball pay to match.

You can tell me there are “concerns” over paying more for one gender’s sport than the other, but when there is a realistic difference in the time commitment up front, it is justified.

A few years ago, IESA (middle school association here) put a time limit on baseball but not on softball.  It was a direct reaction to umpires leaving the white ball for the yellow ball.  That was the first step I have seen in the right direction (although I would say softball should have the time limit, too).

I hate the cue card and I hate even more that I work with imbeciles who can't read. On the rare occasion I have the bases or I am R2 in volleyball, I cringe at the mispronunciations (ethnicity is usually pronounce ethnic-ticity), mumbling, and stumbling that allegedly literate people offer up as their version of the official NJSIAA sportsmanship statement.

Because it's a routine part of my plate meetings and pre-match conferences in volleyball I decided that it should be committed to memory. Makes things much more seamless. I can't believe how many of my partners are genuinely stunned that I could actually memorize a three sentence passage that I say about 100 times a year.

NJ is $106 for baseball and $95 for softball in 2024. Fees used to be up to each association, but now the state is taking over and dictating.  Soon they will be taking over regular season assignment too.

There has always been a difference between the 2 sports.

The cue card is now read at the dugout before the plate meeting. Both umpires must be present and it MUST be read. Penalty is a scolding by the interpreter. There has been much discussion about whether F1 needed to stop warming up to listen. Officially, no, but guys will MSU about anything!

This $100+ game fee is news to me. No complaints about that.

As much of a mess as some areas are with assigning right now, I can’t imagine the NJSIAA assigning the whole state regular season. . That’s akin to the famous Ronald Reagan line. —- The scariest sentence you can hear  is “I’m from the government and we’re here to help “.

I’m a HS Umpire for the Portland Baseball Umpires Association (PBUA), in Portland, Oregon.
Are 2024 HS baseball game fees are $76.00 a game(mileage not included).

PS- our Commissioner(pbua) mentioned that next year the 2025 season is when we’ll see a substantial pay increase per game. But honestly who knows.

Ohio is $77 for Varsity baseball in my area.  $68 for JV and Freshmen baseball.  Zero for mileage, but most games are less than 30 miles round-trip.

Idaho (my district, anyway) is the same rate, but we get mileage (works out to about $50 for an hour drive).

Illinois

No mileage here.

Looking at my records from last year:

  • between $70-$100 for a varsity game (baseball and softball; most were $70-$80)
  • $60 -$80 for a JV game (most $65-$70)
  • $100 for softball varsity + 3 JV innings (one school paid $120)

I'll let you know in a few weeks about this year. . .

2024 varsity game fee is $105. No travel pay. That's a $15 bump from last year.
