  1. I like a "Safe" and point also, the juggle sign would be good, just make a call at least!! I do a lot of Men's Rec League games, and you are creating an un-needed s&#t storm making an abandonment call . Rec league players want good calls on the important plays that can decide a game. We will turn a blind eye to bad pitching mecanics, rather than hunting for balks. We will use different strike zones from a 4 to 2 nailbiter, versus a 11-1 blowout. I like "outs" as much as everyone else, to move the games along, but don't go looking in unusual places for them. Just umpire. (3 beers and 2 whiskeys in, after Jay's lose heartbreaker, so excuse my post!)
  2. questions about the "outerfield" wall...can't wait till it asks about the innerfield fly rules!!
  3. Not sure how listening to Emerson Lake and Palmer makes you a hippy? Not sure why some guys want to use this forum to rehash old gripes, digs , disagreements , insults .etc. etc. Pretty sure the blessing of the officials "eyes"...could be taken by some as a backhanded insult of their abilities. Pretty sure that some of the best advice I got from this site, was the "Do not talk/listen to the fence" Pretty sure there has not been a big change in the culture of "Umpire Abuse" , but hey, I am in the Great White North, so maybe different here.....read Velho's post again, he said it best....you gotta do what's right for you!
  4. Best Canuck currently in the MLB....Stu Scheurwater...now calling 25% more strikes!
  5. Hey Velho....Seattle was always a our favorite road trip to catch a Blue Jays game...love that city....we did Minny last fall and it was great too....gonna miss those trips
  6. no game today for me on Canada Day...but got a different hat for my game on the 4th of July! a little Hockey reference always helps a ball game!
  7. no...no...you guys got it wrong....when you ring the kid up on strike three....you got to say sorry to him!!
  8. Hey Man in Blue...your son in WCL..does he do any game in Edmonton?
  9. Gotta agree with Greyhawk...as long as you are consistent, everybody can figure it out. I change the zone according to skill level of the game, and sometimes even to a batter's willingness to stand in and swing. In my view,,,the zone can change too, according to scoreboard....what's a strike in a 3-2 game will be a lot different in a 15-0 blowout. Just my thoughts...could be wrong, just like the coaches tell me!
  10. not sure, but working again with him on Sunday
  11. thank you...I finally got my buddy getting one wrong...and I will remind him!!
  12. I am doing bases, PU is good veteran umpire....batter makes contact with catcher's mitt, but puts ball in play. PU calls Time...I thought we should let action play out first, with offence getting option...we both work in different codes, is there different ways to rule on this?
  13. Men's Rec. League I am in the C position, or P3...take you pick!...Line drive at pitcher is deflected, nails me on the instep. Time gets called, (or they mistook my cursing for time!)...Plate umpire say he thinks time should not have be called, says I am part of the field. Different umpire for second game, says YES, time should be called, pitcher is different than others infielders. Who right?....my bet is #2
  14. LL Jrs...first game of season...batter is swinging, get nailed hard on back of hand. Hurts bad, and he is pulled from game. Everybody is in the batting order. Can I give the strike to next batter?...or should i just move on to next batter, and start fresh?
  15. the umpire shortage could result in more strikes called low in the zone!
  16. Dead ball...strike still stands...
  17. This sound intriguing....I do Men's Rec Ball, and many of the players are "Vintage"...but this takes it to a whole new level! So do the batters get to signal their preferred pitch location?
  18. 5 pitches in!!....well at least you had his name from the "plate meeting" when you threw him out!!
  19. I second 834k3r's post. Value the discussion and stories. Have done 200+ games over past two seasons, zero ejections, one dugout restriction....maybe it's true that Canadians are just too damn polite!!
  20. Great advice from DAWG....and it even works in higher age groups...be consistent, and coaches catch on pretty quick that you are hunting strikes....helps if you have a good partner, who reinforces that with the base coaches. Get the bats swinging becomes everybody's goal.
  21. drives me nuts when coaches are more concerned about the kid running on U3K that them actually trying to hit the ball!!
  22. My description of "behind" him was poorly worded.. pitch was still coming to plate, going to pass behind him...you have to just Umpire...can't allow someone to make a travesty of the rules. Yes, have seen the NCAA clip, and most will agree the Ump blew the call.
  23. not trying to change topic...but got to disagree....a swing in not always a strike, because it has to be an offer to hit the pitch...had it come up in a U13 game, where the "savvy" batter swings over the plate at a pitch that is behind him.
  24. here's a weird sidetrack....anybody here play some serious poker...cash or tourney? I do on occassion. I can clearly remember (from several years back) the action and results of big hands I lost....big wins, not so much, cause I got it right. Same with the Umpire calls that I coulda/woulda/shoulda made...that may have led to game changing results...remember them clearly even if a few seasons back. Yes....the next play is the most important....but some time the call sticks in the back of the mind....it's not which team won, but maybe why they won. my 2 cents worth
