  1. and yes I want the earlier beer and BBQ....but not all strikes lead to quicker outs!!!!
  2. second line of Maven's answer..."gaming the game"...is the antidote to the "a swing is a swing is a swing' The LL player thought he was so smart....left hand batter. pitch is behind him in dirt....swings over the plate and sprints to first....
  3. Thank you Maven...that is what I was trying to explain to my partner last night," offer at the pitch"...as he is scrolling thru definitions of what makes a strike....
  4. Have had it happen twice in past ten days, once in LL & once in Men's League. Batter wants a swing called a strike, even though they had no intention or even remote possibility of hitting the pitch...different reasons for doing it, one wants dropped third strike, one wants to avoid taking walk. What rule or definition am I calling on to deny it?
  5. Sorta like the strike zone...what the rules say and what you call are age and skill dependent. I do LL & Men's League....little Johnny dropping a F-bomb is one thing....big John yells f--k after being called out is another....profane okay, just don't be personal or persistent...I will drop the f-bomb myself when the foul nails me!
  6. to add more to Beerguy's reply....I think that is almost a standard play in some little league games I do!!
  7. stop it....I know I am old.....but reading all this is just too much of a reminder....you guys are old too!! We are a bunch of old farts who want to stay a part of the kids game!
  8. the runner was" forced."...he was retired before reaching his next base, the run does not count
  9. Excuse my ignorance ...what is SMH?? We could have whole forum on stupid things coaches say. Runner on third, ball four to batter skips thru to backstop, runner trots home...DTAC..pops out of dugout..."Wasn't that a walk, Blue...how does the runner score? "...bit lip to not tell him on magical unicorn!
  10. Hey Velho....I open the zone and then some....but when the pitch in not in same time zone....had 33 pitch half inning last year...32 to walk in the 5 runs...one strike was a gift! Did 13-14 year olds on weekend....had a 4 pitch half inning...thought I had found Jesus! My third year in Mens...and it is great...most guys just happy that semi-official looking umps showed up, after playing Sandlots with players self umpiring. Had to raise my voice this year to a player, defending one of my Teenage umps we were using that game....Gave my best Tom Hanks (A League of their Own) impression..."This is Rec League Man-There's No Yelling in RecLeague"
  11. I am still loyal to doing LL games....my kids played it and I coached in a younger life... but,....now when I am assigned at 9-10 year old walk fest...I feel like I am doing community service for some past crimes! Find an adult rec league....it's the most fun I have plying the Umpire trade...no concerns about jewellery...don't care when someone drops the f-bomb...and get some really good baseball plays to go with some really bad baseball plays!
  12. "It's the exception in Rule 7:08'.....great ending to story...partner, good guy...admits his error...now did he cite right ruling??
  13. Thanks guys....sorta thought I was right, but my "more experienced" partner was so confident in his thinking....and answer to Velho...he slide right onto and over bag...F3 picks up ball, and tags runner, who is on belly trying to reach back to bag.
  14. Men's Rec League, played on played on "slippery" artificial turf. Bang-bang play at first, low throw not picked, runner slides right over the base, as he is scrambling back, he is tagged. ...I froze on call.. he is not trying to advance to second...thought it might be same as overrun of first. Partner says no ...we confer and call runner out. Hope my partner is right. ruling please?
  15. Lime Crush Soda??...now that sounds weird!
  16. Another Albertan...welcome aboard. Great site for info and opinions. The wind has been the biggest weather factor this spring....cold, cold, winds. Was so happy when I worked up a sweat this past weekend. Hey 834k3r...will trade you the Old Dutch chips for some Payday bars...can't seem to find them here!
  17. Great responses from the brotherhood!
  18. Who does not like a good medley to hum along with!
  19. I am scheduled to do opposites on same day next week....LL 9-10 first , then a Men's Rec League for a night cap. Will be interesting to see who whines more?
  20. If you are doing U10....no matter how loud you call out the Infield Fly, I can guarantee at least 50 per cent of the players, coaches and parents will not hear it!!!
  21. So Beerguy55 is a fellow Canuck....up the road from you, I used to take my kids to AAA Edmonton Trapper Games, lots of great MLB names came thru over the years till they left in 2004 to Texas). The Trappers were affiliated with lots of different teams over the year, but who there parent team was, never made me a fan of that team...always loyal to the Expos....later forced to switch to Jays, damn you Washington!...but congrats on 2019 World Series win!!!!! We have college ball here too, but not the WCBL the Dawgs are in.
  22. you just made me look up "vituperation"....now is my word for the day, thank you!
  23. I know a bunt attempt when I see one......but what about some of the strange stuff young kids do, like no swing, try to hold the bat in zone, without much hand separation. If they foul it off for possible strike 3...what is the standard to call it a bunt attempt?
  24. I think Senor Azul answered that question.
  25. my basic rule gripe....little Johnny, the bunting machine, who never swings, bunts one foul for strike three....and parents scream, "It was a foul ball"........YEAH , it was...
