I am looking to update my wardrobe with some good compression shorts since my current ones were made ~WW2.  Any recommendations?  Notes:

1. I don't wear tights, so not interested in those.  That might change for that first game next February :-).

2. I'm not a fashion/brand guy.  I'll always choose value and comfort over "brand for the sake of brand."  That being said, if UA or Nike or Adidas has a great option, I'll check it out.

Thanks!

you may be able to find a bunch of info on the equipment forum by doing a search for compression shorts, and/or tights ....I know that I recall that's been discussed quite a bit in the last few years.

I'm a bit biased

Is Thighpro your company?

There have been products on and off the market where you have garments with long legs (and that protects you from your shin guard straps chafing you) and a pouch for a cup.  There is a bit of compression that supports the quads too.  If you do a lot of baseball, don't skimp on these!

I'm not just a thighpro user.......I wanted these shorts so badly I started the company!

Good on ya! I've played with modifying football shorts and found them lacking so I see the need.

I have worn the Smitty compression shorts with the cup pouch for about 5 years now, although if you wear a separate jock and cup outside these, that also works. They are sized one size small so, size up. If you wear a large, order an XL. $20 + shipping at Ump-Attire.com.

So… they were made of acetate and nylon? I think @Aging_Arbiter might ID them…

was a Nike Pro Combat guy, having maintained an arsenal of 4-5 sets of Sliders (with cup pocket). I never paid full retail, preferring to get them on seasonal closeout from sporting goods stores or eBay. After several thigh impacts, I strongly considered getting a set of compression shorts with thigh plates (football) or thigh pads for catchers, but the football ones lacked cup pocket, and the catcher ones were beaucoup dollars 💸. I finally used an Amazon GC on a set from All-Star, with cup pocket, but while they’re effective, they’re not my favorites. The shock-padding isn’t plating, but instead a “diamond-nub” pattern, and it doesn’t quite cover the facing of the thighs, instead concentrating on the inner surfaces of the thighs… which is where catchers need it… not umpires.

McDavid made their patented hex-pad compression shorts, but I wasn’t too keen on the bulk or cost.

That brings me to my latest purchase (which I’m still waiting for, any minute now!) from @concertman1971’s ThighPro. Compression shorts… in grey :HD:… with cup pocket … and with protective sheet-plating exactly where needed :yippie:!!
I think we’ve got a winner.

It’s like he actually made them for umpires, or somethin’.

We will obviously be expecting a review of the new purchase.

As of 8/9/2023, I’ve received my first two sets of ThighPro shorts. I’m 6’2”, 215, and have a 34” inseam, and wear a 36 in umpire pants, but a 34 in golf slacks and swim shorts… and I ordered size Large.

For all intents and purposes, they’re perfect.

The foam plating is not only pocketed within, but it is also secured within. The foam plating’s position is exactly where it’s needed for umpires. The fabric and its stitching feels robust, yet… premium. This doesn’t feel like a “cheap knockoff”.

It’s grey.

It’s got the ever-necessary cup pocket.

The only improvement suggestions I have are incredibly minor:

  • Perhaps a taller waistband.
  • Perhaps a mesh material for the cup pocket itself (better ventilation).
  • Perhaps “clamp tabs” on the bottom edge for those shirt-stays to attach and grab to.
  • Perhaps screen-printed Sizing and Production Info instead of this little tail-tag… that I’m tempted to remove (I really would encourage you to heavily promote these are Made-in-the-USA, and the company is veteran-owned).

These are game-changers, guys!

I appreciate the review. How snug of a fit is the cup in the pocket? In other words, would a larger cup (like a Diamond MMA, for example) fit in the pocket?

Just to throw this out there - I use McDavid compression shorts, that have a cup pocket.  I've got 3 different sizes of them, because, well, *I've* been 3 different sizes over time.               ........ shut up.

Anyway, I recommend them.  I think I've always worn them backwards from the intention of the manufacturer, because I like the cup pocket being on the inside.  YMMV.

I use the Shock Doctor Flex w/ carbon-fiber plate, and while it fits, it’s not effortless to get in. The silicone shell has just enough tack to grab the fabric, so it takes some… jimmy’ing.

@MadMax

Thank you for the review. Your thoughts about the future versions will be taken into consideration as we are always looking to upgrade! The Tag/Waistband is a great idea, and for the 1st version it was simply a cost line item. (just being honest with you all)

@834k3rThe cup pocket design was intentional. We went through 3 versions of the cup pocket to get it where it fits TIGHT (where it needs to). My recommendation is to put the cup in before putting the shorts on.

I will have more in Gray SOON..... Please go to thighpro.com and sign up for the email. When they go back in stock, you will be the 1st to know and there "may" be a discount in that email.....

@concertman1971 3/4 and full leg are being considered for the umpire side?

Yes they are. I just need the demand!!

If I am completely transparent, samples at this point run me about $500-$1000 per pair. That is for design, pattern making, material, and the "one off" run.

For example, I am working on some other things and the product will be black. I had to buy 412 yards (all of the black in the US) to get the 3 yards I needed!

Hey @concertman1971, super and impressed and happy with your product. Premium comfort and padding coverage that covers up my nasty purple bruise...wish I had ordered them two weeks earlier.

I'm so happy I just pre-ordered 2 more!
