My assigner is going to be putting me in contact with someone about working summer ball. I am assuming this is travel ball tournaments. My question is what type of uniforms will I need to get for this? Is it appropriate to wear my state association stuff (Kentucky) or will I need blank shirts/caps?

Is there an organization cap I can purchase? Feels strange and "unofficial" to just wear a blank hat.

Thanks!

Get with your assignor on what is typically worn / expected to be worn.  Typically summer is blank, different colors, just match (blank hats also) unless of course, there's specific logos your assignor wants

For travel ball,  usually a plain black or blue shirt is fine,  I carry all 4 panels and pin stripes. Some guys still use the old mlb black collar with stripes.

Same pants,  plain cap unless the site gives you a cap.

In California you aren't supposed to eat your association shirts (CIF), but when i was in San Diego County, they have their own patch and do want you to wear it so people know what unit you're with.

No, you should never wear logos for an org that is not sanctioning the event.

Definitely ask the person scheduling for the tournaments.  They may even have their own thing that they want you to wear.  I worked for one org that provided t-shirts.  Yeah, I appreciated the free shirts, didn't care for wearing them on the field.

This is my favorite piece of equipment for working travel-ball tournaments. A couple to start, and a few in my cooler for the rest of the day. This way, I start each game already not giving a SH*#.

I wear a plain hat for travel ball in my town - assigned by the head of the org. I always feel a bit weird about it. No logo just looks…odd. On myself or partners. Almost seems unofficial or discrediting, like where is this guy from? I’ve thought about getting the MLB logo hat. No one would confuse me with an MLB umpire on a travel field, but I’d at least have something on the hat.

Am I wrong to consider this? Ha. Then just come up with a cover for STFU if asked. Something something something Umpires.

I think we just started something beautiful …

It's the umpiring version of Let's Go Brandon

FWIW, I hate politics, so I am not trying to introduce anything here, merely making an observation.

I'm sure that the audience/spectators will come up with other anachronims

I agree re: the blank hats - it all depends who I'm umping for, but one league doesn't have a league hat for us, so all the umps in the league wear the HS logo, since we are state certified.

Just my opinion, but not as big of a faux pas much as wearing your Burger King uniform to work at McDonalds.

I disagree about the blank hat.  It is wearing uniforms improperly that that gives that tv/movie umpire vibe.

  • Mixing up the colors (know which shirts go with black and which go with navy)
  • Wrinkle, dingy, or sun-faded uniform
  • Ill-fitting uniform that was handed down
  • Mesh-back or adjustable caps (or, gasp, the USSSA floppy brim hat)
  • Wearing another association/code's logos (or your favorite pro team)
  • Plate gear outside / hat backwards / gardening bags
