From a local league quiz:

There are runners on 1st and 2nd base and no outs, the batter hits the ball and three outs are recorded without the defense ever touching the ball.  Explain how that happened.

There are an infinite number of possibilities….one example, batter hit a HR but passed r1 going back to the bag. R1 passed r2, and r2 thinking he was out, never touched home and ran into his dugout for abandonment (or in fed an appeal without touching ball)

Could throw in coach assisting runners, interference, missed bases, abandonment, passing runners, there are numerous answers possible.

the most common answer is: Batter hits infield fly; R1 passes R2; R2 hit by the ball off the base.

And an actual FED case play.

How did I know I'd see you answering this

The key to this situation is to know what things the offense can do that warrant an immediate out AND the ball stays in play;  and therefore what things the offense can do for an immediate out AND the ball is immediately dead.

As pointed out, interference is usually the third out because that kills the play.  Passing does not kill the play.

For examples.....

Have fun!

Coach INT is also an out that leaves the ball live.

NCAA does call it a "delayed dead ball" and waits until playing action is over to call the out. Could result in playing on an already out runner.

Both runners and the BR look for, and plow into, the nearest defender they can reach, and are all called out for malicious contact??

Ok,    I am joking but I am sure I will take some flak here but whatever..

A Low flying jet scares all three runners into thinking its thunder and they all sprint for the dugout once crossing into the dugout they are all called out for abandonment.

On the facebook pages, they're about 10 minutes away from one of them commenting that they had that exact experience.

Batter hits a ball to the gap, defense decides not to retrieve the ball because it's too far away, R1 and R2 run directly to the dugout to get cupcakes, B/R after passing first runs to the dugout too, because he's afraid he won't get any.
