Whiny players. If you gonna swing swing! Don't leave it up to the umpire.

They way it should have gone...

Joe West: "UmpJeff, did he go?"

UmpJeff:  "No, he didn't go!"

Yes, I was there...(I wasn't U1, but I was there.)

He didn't need to ask - he already called the strike.

See how far you get arguing balls/strikes with West. Go sit down Hunter

Alternate  situation - Joe doesn't make a call, asks U1 "did he go". U1 one says "Yes he did". Ballgame over.

Postgame Mr. Hunter tells the media "These umpires need to do their jobs- make their own calls. Why make some who is 120 feet call a strike for you?"

Yes.  There are many alternate situations.  But, that wasn't even close.  It's all about following the MLB mantra/buzzphrase...Get It Right.

I'm not naïve to think that Country Joe's reputation doesn't proceed him.  Quite the contrary.  However, that doesn't give him a free pass...at least not IMHO...

I guess that's just Manny...er, Joe West being Joe West...

I'm not saying that I would've ruled a swing either, but the OBR rule simply asks if we judge an attempt to strike at the baseball.

Cruddy way to end the game, but Hunter has also made a career of swinging at poor pitches too...it's not like he's eagle eye up there.

No, OBR only asks if it's ruled no swing.

If it's judged to be a swing, it cannot be appealed.

You are misinterpreting my post.

I didn't post about appeal, but how an umpire judges if the batter attempted to swing at the pitch or not.

@ZebraStripes...

I am an umpire...like most everyone else out here.  No.  I don't check if I adjudge a "checked swing" a strike.

I know the mechanic, just like everyone out here knows the mechanic on check swings, and that he wasn't going to ask U1 if he had a swing because he called it a strike.

I'm not insinuating he should have checked with U1.  I just expected a little more out of a 38 year veteran, I suppose.  Because, let's be honest...he butchered that call.  Torii had a legitimate complaint.

Just my :2cents:

I'd agree he checked the swing, but I have seen less called for a swing over the years.

Like two consecutive Marlins batters last year getting hit with their bat essentially still on their shoulders, but the 1st base umpire somehow judged them both to have swung.

I have to disagree with the assertion that Mr. Hunter is not one to argue with umpires.

Am I the only one that thinks he offered (besides Joe) ?

I could see a "yes he went" swing call in this situation. In the split-second a plate umpire has to make a judgment (WITHOUT the benefit of Slo-mo replay) I could see this call being made.  But I am a big proponent of yes he did on more occasions than no he did not.

He definitely offered.

Anything and everything that Joe West does on a baseball field will be magnified 3x over, just because is West.  So guys get over it.  BTW who have listen to his 2 CD?
