Well after doing the final tally count on 2013 I figured out that I passed the 600 games in a season mark. Called 623 games this past year. Most I had done in a season before that was last year when I did 586 games. Gotta love Texas weather where we can call all year around.

I call BS   i dont really see how this is possible I called nearly every weekend you did and I know you took several weekends off or were TD for the weekend and didnt call much. Plus we had pretty much all of August off at TCA.    I only did 345 games I can see if maybe you did 450 or maybe even 500 but I cant see how you did 623 games.

Calling games every week night plus AAYBA helped get my game count back up. That was two weeks straight of 6-7 games a day for 6 days both weeks. That was 77 games alone in just a 2 week span. I also had 43 high school games not including summer ball or MIckey Mantel. Most of the games I got were in the spring when I wasn't doing much TD work. I was calling 8 games on saturday and 7-8 on Sunday every weekend. Trey did even more than I did. He got close to the 800 mark.

You must be Superman.

6-7 games a day would be like 14 hours a day for 2 weeks???????

I don't think I have ever meet someone that can work a schedule like that and provide quality umpiring.

Must be nice to be so young.

Hope you have a good investment adviser to help make all that money your making work for you.  :notworthy:

I guess there is a new term to use instead of Game Whore.

Game S L U T!!!!! :wow:

It's my full time job I have to do that many games to get by. Trust me I'm not making that much money at all when you consider it's not a secondary job for a little side cash. The two weeks of baseball all day had a week off in between. I can assure you that the quality of umpiring doesn't suffer because of the number of games I do. I actually think I could probably squeeze in another game or 2 on those long days before I started to suffer from it.

Not even in a parallel universe! I don't care who you are after 2 games your "game will start to suffer.

I guess that's where I have a problem with that approach...........your statement is that you could do more games before you start to suffer..........and I am assuring you that whether you believe it or not, it would be impossible for the quality of that many games to remain high if umpired by the same man..... . Last injury was Oct 2011. Your wife kicking you doesn't count!

Now that's funny.

I'm assigning a tournament next week and I won't use a guy more than two a day if possible. These are college umpires and they will tell you the game suffers after two. All of them have let me know that they only want to do two per day.

Why the negative about the number of games--if a plumber works a lot we call him a hard worker but you call this guy a SLUT  ?????

Hey, it's probably easy working 600+ games when you've got partners like me carrying you?

Why in the world are we bashing this kid? He's young and has a lot of energy and loves to umpire. It's totally unfair to bash him without ever seeing him work. And I would like to remind everyone that earlier this year, Clint Fagan worked a 6+ hour game and had perfect accuracy in the 18th inning. So yes, it is possible to work a lot of baseball in one day and still be good.

I won't discourage you from umpiring that many games, because if you can do it at a high enough quality in others' as well as your own eyes, and you WANT to do it, all the power to you.

BUT, I will say that in regards to wanting to do the games that you need to consider your future while agreeing to so many games... Sure, you might have no problem doing a massive number of games in a day, and in a season right now, but will you feel the same way in ten years? How about in five?

Be extremely careful not to take what can be a sixty year run and turn it into a ten year because you pushed yourself too far at a young age.

Working in an area where baseball is played from February to November does allow for a high game count. A calendar like this is extremely beneficial for those of us who supplement our income with money made officiating ball games. For example, I was able to call HS baseball (V, JV, and F) four nights a week during the spring season and the fall season (in Oklahoma, small schools have a second baseball season if they don't have a football program). During these seasons, I called several 3-way tourneys on Saturdays. During the summer, I regularly call between 6 and 12 games per week; it' can be exhausting.

To add to the punishment, I call about 25 dates of MS/HS basketball. Middle school assignments are four games a night and high school are two games per night. Talk about a glutton for punishment.

I don't have a total game count, but I'm sure its quite high.

As for injuries, I tore my plantaris muscle in my calf last year, and am currently working through a hip flexor issue.

I agree, a high game-count may not make you a better umpire, but it sure helps pay the bills.

Impressive. And that's a ton of $$$$ for a kid your age. Nice job!

Here in NW OhIo we're lucky to start in April and it is usually done by August. There is some fall ball but because football is so big here there are not very many teams/games.

There are absolutely people who can work that many games.

My choice is not to. Once I was working over 200 games a year and I was happy. During the season in my area I was working 2 games most weekday evenings and 5-6 every weekend.

Now my preference is to work 2-3 games during the work week and work 2-3 games over a weekend. And that's good for me it allows me to spend time with my family and peruse other interests and in general have a life outside of my full-time job and umpiring.

The definite draw-back to calling so many games is lack of family time. To try and offset some of the time missed during the season(s), we go on several vacations during the summer months.

damn 600...I thought my 161 games was tough...but I work full time as well...I do most of my work on the weekends about 3-4 games Saturday and Sunday. During regular season I do about 2-3 games a week. Summer is where I bust my ass (having 2 girls plus SWMBO) can be pricey hahaha

You are correct. But Fagan was working 4 man vs. 2 man. Try again.

Yeah, as I say before, professional baseball and amateur baseball are 2 different worlds.  I won't bash b/c I have not seen him work.  But, I would guess that the level of ball and the type of games have to be considered.  Lazy games, who cares as long as the pitches are within the same state.  But, a fast pace  and a lot of 1st to 3rd plays will take its toll if done correctly.

Who knows.  Maybe he can keep the quality up for over 12 hours.  Hard to imagine but possible.

The next time I visit a Emergency Room or Urgent Care, the wife will be posting my gear for sale on here.

I have been lucky this year with no visits.

Last injury was Oct 2011.

You know you just sealed your fate, don't you? My guess is that by game three next season you are nursing some sort of hideous welt somewhere.

I think that falls into the same category as the "Game's moving along nicely, huh?" comment from coaches.

Kudos to anyone that can physically endure that many games.  I'm 47 and am certain that my body would be wrecked if I did half that many.  I've done 108 this year and am flirting with on/off knee pain as a result.

I don't have the time to even WATCH that many games.

Please understand that the guys that I know that call 300+ games a year either umpire full-time, or have summers off. I wouldn't call near as any games if I weren't a teacher.

Shawn you know what's really crazy is how any guys we work with who game whore even more than I do. Trey and Paul both had more games than I did and Papa Murphy was on pace to do more than all of us had he not started his new job half way through the summer and had to take saturdays off most weekends. I'm not sure Tim's exact game count but I looked back at what all he did at TCA and he was somewhere around the 400-425 range for the year just at TCA.

It's amazing what a person can do when they are driven. I'll give you an example, my brother works for a natural gas company in Texas. He spends the majority of his 10 hour day outside, wearing jeans, a long-sleeved denim shirt, and a welding mask while working on gas lines. He does this year in and year out; in August (105*) and in January (20*).

Sounds crazy doesn't it? Working, in the Texas heat, ensuring that his last weld of the day is as good as his first.

Like I said, it's amazing what a person can do when they put their mind to it.

I think that it is almost impossible if not physical but time wise. I spend most of my time umpiring that I am not working my regular job and I almost made 300. There is not enough time to work 600+ Sent Via Telekinesis

I umpire full time though and don't have another job during baseball season to get in the way.
