Another thread me made come up with this one.

 

Did any of you play any Musical Instruments as a Youngster in School?

 

 

I was in the HS Orchestra and played the Violin  :violin:

 

I was a Second Violinist 1st Chair.  :nod:

I was born and blessed w/ the ability to play the drums.....self taught, and been in 2 different bands in my time ........

 

One original band doing funk/rock, and one cover band (most recently 2005-2010) doing rock covers from the 60's to current .....fun stuff

Started on guitar at 13. I play country/classic rock/southern rock/blues (not very well, but I enjoy it)

I played clarinet 5th-6th grade, then switched to bass clarinet, played that 6th grade through sophomore year of college.  I also got play contrabass clarinet senior year of college.  I also played clarinet in the Iowa State University Cyclone Football "Varsity" Marching Band sophomore to senior year of college.

Currently play alto saxophone is my schools top concert band and jazz band, as well as the marching band and pep band... I plan on continuing in college, wherever I go.

 

Here is the concert band earlier this year playing Rhapsody in Blue (George Gershwin) with school alumnus and world renowed clarinetist Dave Bennett.

Played the sax. Never amounted to anything beyond playing in a community band, but i do enjoy it

Started drums in 2nd grade... actually I was three when I discovered where Mom kept the pots and spoons...

 

Specialized in symphonic percussion and jazz/blues, and I've played in a couple of Rock (and one Disco) band. I still play for some community and church stuff, as well as sit in with some local Blues friends when I can.

 

Amazingly, from pots to drums to bringing home my marching gear, my parents never told me to "knock it off!" The trade-off was piano lessons, so yeah I did that, too.

Seriously. I love music and always wanted to play guitar. Tried to teach myself basics but I just don't have IT.

Funny story

Went upstairs, got my rig and played the song along with them playing guitar hero. Try that, you little b@st@rds! :D

Pushing Play on the cassette/cd was about as far as I got in my youth, but music played a HUGE role in my life.  Raised on Buddy Holly, Elvis, Hank Williams, Tanya Tucker, etc. gave me a life long appreciation of the power of music.  I reveled in the hard rock and metal of the 70's, 80's and 90's, but have always appreciated any form of music.

 

Jocko, it's funny you mention your story.  Having never been gifted with any form of musical talent I tried my hand last year at the whole Guitar Hero thing with my 13 y/o son and I must say, I'm pretty much a lost cause!  It did manage to get him excited enough to want to learn, so I got him a great guitar for X-mas and he's having a ball learning it, and I'm living vicariously through him!

 

I deeply respect all of you that have the talent to play, and as a huge fan I'm grateful you all contribute to keeping music alive in our crazy world.

You'd have a really hard time finding a HS clarinet player that could play Rhapsody in Blue.

 

The Goodman piece is Sing Sing Sing.  My son played the clarinet part in the HS jazz band. Our HS percussionist that made All-Eastern played the Krupa part. Our HS has one of the top HS jazz bands in the state.

I played baritone/euphonium all the way through HS in concert & Marching Band.  I miss it sometimes, but  SWMBO would kill me if I dropped some coin on an instrument on top of umpire gear.

I am a guitar playing fool, and have been playing for 45 years. I was in a cover band for about 20 years and made some bucks playing back in BC.

I now occasionally play at retirement communities to entertain the people there. I drag in a small PA and accoustic and sing and play for an hour or 2.
